If there were one engine I could bring back and covert
If there were one engine I could bring back and covert to WB/UCI protocols, it would be Marty Hirsch's Mchess.

MChess is great. But I think I'd like to try Socrates or maybe even better, Chess System Tal as a UCI/WB engine.
Either of those would be fantastic...but so would MChess of course.

I definitely have to agree with you about Chess System Tal, it is right up there with Mchess for me.BrendanJNorman wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 10:50 amMChess is great. But I think I'd like to try Socrates or maybe even better, Chess System Tal as a UCI/WB engine.

Psion Chess by Richard Lang (https://www.retrogames.cz/play_430-DOS.php) I played a lot of games against it as a boy, and over the course of one summer holiday proceeded from losing at level one to winning at next-to-last level. I remember the engine as very stable, level-headed opponent. Also, it did have some form of (limited) learning.

30+ years ago I used Ruffian and was my favorite . I think it is UCI but some years ago I tried it on Arena gui and was very slow going to ply-depth 20.

+1 for MChess.
A couple of years ago I briefly corresponded with Marty. At that time he didn't rule out a new version of MChess. It had "maybe-one-day" status.
