Re: buying a new computer
Wow … new generation 64 core CPU at less than $1800 … that is getting very interesting. Should be able to put together a very nice system for less than $3500. Many new technologies coming on that are making me look towards upgrading my 8 core CPU system. New version of USB, faster memory … faster SSD's … better and faster PCI slots. I just want to see this 3rd generation CPU clear up any possible hiccups that are bound to happen with new stuff that has still not matured.

how much slower than a second gen TR?Albert Silver wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2019 11:40 pm Watch for Black Friday prices on the second gen chips too. Last November I picked up a brand new 16-core first gen TR (1950x) for $405 from Newegg.

Not twice as slow. When I bought it, the new 2950x was retailing for $700, boasting speed improvements of 0.2GHz. I get a standard 3.7GHz on all 16 cores, and 30-32 million nps average in the middlegame with SF10. Good enough.dannyb wrote: ↑Fri Oct 18, 2019 12:03 pmhow much slower than a second gen TR?Albert Silver wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2019 11:40 pm Watch for Black Friday prices on the second gen chips too. Scores are a bit scattered, possibly reflecting memory configuration and speed? Gen 2 seems a hair faster...

With a good water cooler it can be reach 3.9-4.0 GHz for all cores.Albert Silver wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2019 4:33 pmNoctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 Premium-Grade 140mm CPU Cooler for AMD TR4/SP3 (that is the invoice description)Zenmastur wrote: ↑Fri Oct 18, 2019 9:40 pmWhat are you using to keep it cool?Albert Silver wrote: ↑Fri Oct 18, 2019 5:51 pmNot twice as slow. On the same clock frequency the second gen TR is faster only about 10 % than the first gen.

Re: buying a new computer
No doubt, but adding a watercooler to gain 5% seems quite pointless. Plus I could clock more than this easily. Right now the temps never go past 60 C. as it is.corres wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2019 8:05 pmWith a good water cooler it can be reach 3.9-4.0 GHz for all cores.Albert Silver wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2019 4:33 pmNoctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 Premium-Grade 140mm CPU Cooler for AMD TR4/SP3 (that is the invoice description)Zenmastur wrote: ↑Fri Oct 18, 2019 9:40 pmWhat are you using to keep it cool?Albert Silver wrote: ↑Fri Oct 18, 2019 5:51 pmNot twice as slow. It depend on the concrete CPU. If you have a better than average sample you can really enhance the clock frequency further.Albert Silver wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2019 9:56 pmNo doubt, but adding a watercooler to gain 5% seems quite pointless.
