I mean, a site devoted to chess and no one plays chess online?! You must admit, this is . . . remarkable

Maybe one of these:
https://www.store.chessclub.com
https://www.play.chessbase.com/en/
https://www.lichess.org/
https://www.gameknot.com/#csolurk
https://www.chessworld.net/chessclubs/asplogin.asp
https://www.chess24.com?ref=csolurk
https://www.chess.com/play/computer
http://www.redhotpawn.com
http://www.playchess.com
http://www.lichess.org
http://www.itsyourturn.com
http://www.freechess.org
http://www.infinitychess.com

Lichess is the busiest one, with millions and millions of games every month (36,745,427 games this August, for instance).

Or you can use Winboard and connect to any of the servers in the drop down list.
Some of those forums might have rules against playing using an engine. I guess a lot of people do it anyway.
I never play online anymore. I only play against computers and once in a great while against a human OTB.
I found the online people to be rude and churlish (more and more so over time). But YMMV

Thanks Dan. I went to 3 or 4 of those today but engines are banned. I'll try the others. Chessbase is also a possibility.

At my house.
I have lots of computers and lots of chess engines.
I play against the strong engines on supercomputer hardware and get pounded.
I play against the weak engines on low end hardware for revenge, hollow as it may be. Golem is my favorite for that.

Mostly I play 1.b4 games.

I really do love LiChess the best, with Chess.com coming in 2nd place for human vs human (5' Blitz) games. I use Playchess for engine vs engine games.
