Stockfish mods : Sting-SF, Honey, Crystal, SugaR

Post by Vinvin »

Thanks for all these mods made to Stockfish, they are very valuable tools to analyze positions.

Crystal by Joseph Hellis : evolution of Matefinder. More tactical aware than the regular Stockfish.
Honey by MikeB : evolution of McBrain and McCain. More tactical aware than the regular Stockfish.
SugaR (I'm not sure what are the mods inside this source code)
Sting-SF by Marek Kwiatkowski (Aka lech) : based on SF 2.1, Improved to analyze "study-like" positions with trapped pieces, mate threads, sacrifices, pins, long king march, fortress, ...

The way chosen by the Stockfish team development is to strengthen Stockfish for the results by playing itself in fast games.
This system improved Stockfish in a lot of position but weaken it (taking a lot of time to find the good move) for some others :

1) Big sacrifice to mate some moves later, example : r2q1r2/1b2bpkp/n3p1p1/2ppP1P1/p6R/1PN1BQR1/NPP2P1P/4K3 w - - bm Qf6+;
and lot of sacrifices against the castled king are underestimated (Bxh7+, Bxh6, Rxg7, Nf6+, ...).
2) Fortress : 3B4/1r2p3/r2p1p2/bkp1P1p1/1p1P1PPp/p1P4P/PPB1K3/8 w - - bm Ba4+;
3) Trapped piece : 8/4nk2/1p3p2/2rp2pp/1P1R1N1P/6P1/3KPP2/8 b - - am Rb5
4) Long threats : 6R1/8/2pB3k/2P4p/5p1q/5P2/4P1K1/8 w - - bm Bf8+;
5) Zugzwang : 2b1rk2/5p2/p1P5/2p2P2/2p5/7B/P7/2KR4 w - - bm f6;
6) Hidden threats : 4K2k/1pQp3p/1R4p1/1P4P1/8/3P3P/1q3r2/8 w - - bm Qd8;
7) Long term sacrifice : 8/3P3k/n2K3p/2p3n1/1b4N1/2p1p1P1/8/3B4 w - - bm Nf6+;

I ran your seven positions for 1 minute each with 11 threads at 3.2 GHz with a bunch of engines:
MateFishWCP_2019-07-22_popcnt
AsmFishWCP_2019-07-22_popcnt
Cfish-modern-gcc
Crystal-x64-mingw
Houdini 6 Tactical 1
Komodo-13.1-64bit
Sting16
Stockfish-x64-mingw-dann
C-Honey-X5i
CorCFishExt-x86-64-modern
Fire_7.1_x64_popcnt
Ethereal11.50-x64-popcnt
Nirvanachess 2.4 (64-Bit Popcount)
Ethereal11.50-x64-popcnt
Nirvanachess 2.4 (64-Bit Popcount)
RofChade
Arasanx-64-popcnt
Sugar (Current source)

Of those engines, only two engines solved any problems at one minute.
Houdini solved 2 and Sting solved 5.
No engine solved the first or the last at one minute time control.

I had to redo part of my run because I discovered that I had two engines configured improperly.

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Dann Corbit wrote: Sat Aug 24, 2019 1:19 am I ran your seven positions for 1 minute each with 11 threads at 3.2 GHz with a bunch of engines:

Sugar (Current source)

Of those engines, only two engines solved any problems at one minute.
Houdini solved 2 and Sting solved 5.
No engine solved the first or the last at one minute time control.

I had to redo part of my run because I discovered that I had two engines configured improperly.
