The real differences are not nearly so large.
That is because you will need a whole machine to do chess, and not just a CPU.
So when you add in all the other stuff, we are talking about $6000 instead of $4500.
So the ratios do not look that bad in the end.
And always get the really big power supply. That way, you can plug in the huge GPU(s) when it comes along and things like that.

The exact chess performance is engine dependent too. Generally in comparison to Threadripper 1950x you can expect about 40 Elo plus - without any test.
I hope 2990x will work more effectively on bmi2 engines than 1950x does it.

Afaik BMI2 is still slow as molasses, and AVX-512 still missing. Zen+ is just a tiny improvement over Zen, hopefully these things will be fixed next year when Zen2 arrives.

Not sure if speed is recorded at a particular depth, or represents a limiting value. Am assuming the number of search threads matches the number of (physical?) cores on the chip.
