Hi,
I made a match inside Arena 3.5.1 installed as wb engine with comandline parameter winboard. The match was against Zeus 1.27 (2052), 40 moves in 3 minutes, ponder off:

Diep 2.0 - Zeus 1.27 : 10,0/20 8-8-4 (1010101=11=1==010000)
There is a little problem: Diep is pondering and I am not able to stop this behavior (permanent_brain false does not help).

I just found this classic old engine in one of my old harddrives!

It works in Arena for games against me, but for tournaments it seems to crash every time.

Does anyone know how to make it work?

Happy to share it if someone wants to have a look and solve this problem for me.

Very curious to see how this guy plays.

Diep is a incredible chess engine! The creator Vincent D... a very very talented guy...most difficult but got it working in Fritz and Lokasoft and Shredder & chess gui's (parameter settings need detail work) my only wish is that he continued to update this fantastic tactical monster of a chess engine...AR :D :wink:

You might have use the old xboard commands "hard" and "easy" for "pondering on" and "pondering off" test it on the command line first. If there is config file of sorts, you might try the command in there "easy" and then a return key.

Where in the rules does it say that it's forbidden to link to abandonware?

Abandonware as you think of it simply does not exist.
It's a myth mostly propagated by kids, who like to download everything from the internet.

It can only be legal, if the copyright holder gives his permission.
Otherwise file for the US copyright law paragraph 302...
https://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap3.html

Moreover do you think moderation removed the link (red text!) just out of fun?
No need to request more answers from me, I have better things to do.
In case of an urgent need for more talk about the issue, there are institutions who care.

Guenther is 100% correct. Furthermore the rules are stated as follows:

===========================================

Once a member gains access to the message board, he may read all messages and post new or response messages with the proviso that these new or response messages:

1. Are, within reason, on the topic of computer chess
2. Are not abusive in nature
3. Do not contain personal and/or libelous attacks on others
4. Are not flagrant commercial exhortations
5. Are not of questionable legal status.

============================================

Furthermore the issue we are talking is not even questionable, it is black and white , it is illegal. Just because some other forum does it and gets away with it because the copyright holder does not enforce the copyright , does not make it legal.

Hi Werner,

What OS are you running? Diep 2.0 does not run at all in Arena, although it can be installed. I used winboard as command line parameter and Winboard (old) as protocol.

It can't be installed into Winboard GUI, since it gives an error.

Thanks,
CL

Hello,

I just hop in, in the discussion without reading the threads here as i simply lack time for that.

Diep is not free to copy. It's not freeware and abandonware i've never heard of either.

Diep development stopped in december 2012, though if you'd fix just the bugs in search, some are so stupid you wouldn't believe that something with such huge bugs can have such high elo, it would be elo 4000+ or so.

Yet it would be very fulltime work to test all those bugs out.

If you look how strong some of the engines nowadays are tuned, it would be a lot of fulltime work to make up all that elo.

For sure i do not have time to do all that. I'm about to release a professional 3d printer to market and hope it sells well, though it still some work to release it.

I'm busy with robotics, cad design and 3d printing since 2012.
