Texel using MPV:3 found that Be3 is no worse than Mate in 42.

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

And yours also shows both b6 and Be3 as acceptable answers. Thanks, Jon and Dann, for the confirmation.

What trick is needed to implement in order the engine to solve this puzzle? I have been trying to figure out what it is without success. My engine play stupid moves that lead to nothing, like Kb3 or Be3....

thanks
the yet to be released McBrain v2.1 ( a stockfish engine), no egtb used here.

current stockfish dev was about the same on my machine...

I do not see why these solutions are taking so long. WAC100 has been considered "easy" for 10 years now. I just ran this on my MacBook (pretty old 1.7ghz machine). I see this kind of time:

IE winning material at 0.19 seconds, depth=24, Much bigger win of material at .67 seconds, depth=34, and syzygy win at 6 seconds, depth=39.

This is not about any particular knowledge, just depth. To discover that if you don't make that b6 (or Be3 move) NOW, black can defend and prevent the entry of white. All it takes is depth.

The PV shows that it repeats the start position and then plays b6+. I'm not sure that counts as an alternate solution.

Don't go by what I post - I was letting it run to find the "shortest" mate without egtb, with syzygy 6 man, it locks in on a mate score with at 1.375 secs at depth 25:

With Pennery's wall detection (Crafty 20) enabled for the compile, Crafty would solve wac.230 in zero seconds.

With no artificial inflation for passed pawns.
It would instantly see that not making the rook move moved the score to 0.0 (after a trivial number of plies).
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.
