Fascinating imbalance

Yannick Berthelot vs Glenn Flear | 1988

[d]5k2/ppp2ppp/1b6/8/6b1/2P5/PP4PP/RN2K3 w - - 0 20
An unbalanced position has arisen straight out of the opening, in which, with an open centre, Black has a pawn and the bishop pair for the exchange. Is it enough compensation?

«Indeed, two bishops and a pawn are often sufficient compensation for a rook and knight, but here the decisive role is played by defects in the pawn structure. Although, of course, Black's tasks is  not easy: in some cases the bishops together with the queen are able to spring an unpleasant suprise. - My Great Predecessors, Part II, Game 93 | G. Kasparov»

Quips found in books about this imbalance:

«As for rook and knight vs. two bishops and pawn, with nothing else but pawns on the board, the rook's side has a mild advantage, but add a rook to each side and the game is dead even. In general, with other pieces on the board, this imbalance should be considered even, with only a trivial edge for the rook's side»

«Many of the Classicists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century claimed that two bishops versus rook and knight were equivalent. I don’t believe that this is the case, i.e., I think the extra material will usually win out, but this view continues to influence chess thinking to some extent even today»

«Adding the better cooperation of the rook with the bishops, many Soviet theoreticians believed that, in active positions, rook and two bishops outperform two rooks and a knight»

«Although I fortuitously saved this game it gave me the lasting impression that, ceteris paribus, rook and knight are superior to two bishops. Here, even with an extra pawn, Black was always somewhat worse. I’m also willing to bet that White’s chances are better than 57% (see the introduction to this chapter) in the initial position, but everyone is entitled to their opinion! My impression is that, in cases where the pawn structures are intact, the bishops can’t find enough targets and are thus inferior»

Anyone willing to volunterely help me research this imbalance further, - arrange with decent hardware K10.1 with white pieces against SF Dev as black or vice versa. TC 90+30 atleast.

Above position is a draw, while black has minuscule advantage.

If you really want to go after an interesting imbalance, please try this one:

[d]rk1r4/1b1p2pp/p1pPpp2/Pp2P2q/1P1P1P2/3BBN2/5RPP/R5K1 w - - 0 24

No matter what engines say, white wins here.

Good luck.

This is an eval position, difficult for search to find anything, win is some 50 moves away.

I am not certain even if playing it out with 2 top engines will bear any similitude to the truth, as sometimes engines simply do not find the rigth way, but this should definitely be a better investigatory mechanism than simply relying on (false) engine eval above.

If you want to give me a hand, some 120' games will certainly help. :)

I started an analysis and got either a fail high or fail low at ply 43 before I left.
Tomorrow morning it may contain something interesting

I did not get to an advantage for white, but I did get as far as "even-steven":

Thanks, Dann and Rob!

According to me, best white move is not d5, but h3, with focus on the king side, after white improves on the king side, it gets easier to win.

The plan is to play h3, g4, etc.

Interesting. I will give that a look and see what happens.
All my machines are busy on other projects right now. So probably tomorrow.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

I have bleeding edge Stockfish and Sting7.3 examining the forward position after the pawn push now and will let them both run all night.
