Noomen.ctg: UPDATE

Post by Jeroen »

Dear chess friends,

Here is a brand new update of my latest, free book, Noomen.ctg:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/zohjq ... Noomen.rar

With many corrections, additions, improvements, novelties and a few extra lines.

Please make sure always to use the following options (see Book Options):

1. Tournament Book should be switched ON
2. Minimum games should be set to 3
3. Up to move should be set to 100

Not using these settings might result in a lot of weak(er) moves being played.

As usual, a big "thank you" to all the people who helped me to produce this new version. Enjoy!

PS The book will also be available from Rybkachess.com and Ed's website. As soon as I have the links, I will post them here.

Thanks a lot Jeroen!

I only have a Chessbase HIARCS 12 installation on my old computer at the moment, so I could compare it with good old HIARS 12.ctg. It is an awful lot bigger than that! HIARCS 12.ctg is 65.384 kB, your new Noomen.ctg is 1.019.676 kB no less. I don't have the previous Noomen.ctg on this machine. Here is a sample opening battle, just for fun, against HIARCS 12. Chessbase stops after the first engine leaves book, if I understand correctly, after setting max moves to 1. It says "Beide engines laatste zet uit boek", "Both engines last bookmove" but that can't be correct, it says the same after every 'opening battle'. Noomen was still in book after HIARCS' dxc3

place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Sorry, but Noomen is weaker than latest Cerebellum.
I tested it
I ran Brainfish/Cerebellum on 1 computer against Asmfish/Noomen.ctg on my 2nd computer, in a French Defence.
When the Engines came out of Book, Brainfish/Cerebellum had a big +0.60 lead over the Noomen Book.
Such a big lead is disastrous in online engine-engine matches.
Cerebellum wins, no contest.

The book does not play the French unless you force it to.

I did, because I like the French defense, and if this book is so good, it should be able to handle it.
On the other hand, Cerebellum has handled whatever I threw at it.

How about letting us see the game and then play one, with reverse colours, where you play 1...e6 and publish that here as well.

I test it against cerebellum book at TC 3'+2" for 50 games, ponder off, 1 thread.

Stockfish 190816 64 POPCNT, using noomen book
Brainfish 190816 64 POPCNT, using cerebellum release 12

Note that the Brainfish.exe file is a bit faster than the equivalent version from the one in abrok.

The following data below will show at what move (fmvn) did the engines started thinking.

Example and interpretation for the first 4 games.

Code: Select all

color white, round 1, player Stockfish, fmvn 32, move e3c1, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 43 (white)
color white, round 2, player Brainfish, fmvn 19, move c3e4, result 0-1, lastfmvn 78 (black)
color black, round 2, player Stockfish, fmvn 29, move f5d3, result 0-1, lastfmvn 78 (black)
color white, round 3, player Stockfish, fmvn 32, move e3c1, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 43 (white)
color white, round 4, player Brainfish, fmvn 16, move c4e6, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 25 (black)
color black, round 4, player Stockfish, fmvn 18, move e7d6, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 25 (black)
In round 1 or first game, Sf is white and it started thinking at move 32. This game ended at move 43 (lastfmvn) with result 1/2-1/2.
In this game there is no data for Bf (Brainfish) because it is still in the book, and does not think at all till the draw result.

Round 2 or game 2, both engines have data. Bf as white started thinking at move 19 while Sf started thinking at move 29. Bf here loses.

Round 3 seemed like similar to round 1.

Round 4, Bf started thinking at move 16 while Sf at move 18, result was a draw after 25 moves.

Here is the complete Data:

Code: Select all

color white, round 1, player Stockfish, fmvn 32, move e3c1, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 43 (white)
color white, round 2, player Brainfish, fmvn 19, move c3e4, result 0-1, lastfmvn 78 (black)
color black, round 2, player Stockfish, fmvn 29, move f5d3, result 0-1, lastfmvn 78 (black)
color white, round 3, player Stockfish, fmvn 32, move e3c1, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 43 (white)
color white, round 4, player Brainfish, fmvn 16, move c4e6, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 25 (black)
color black, round 4, player Stockfish, fmvn 18, move e7d6, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 25 (black)
color white, round 5, player Stockfish, fmvn 31, move h6h8, result 1/2-1/2, lastfmvn 32 (black)

I don't need to prove anything to you. My Results are good enough for me.
You can check for yourself, if so inclined.
I did the reverse also, and Noomen/AsmFish was the first to come out of Book with only + 0.20 advantage, which is perfectly manageable ; and the mighty Brainfish/Cerebellum was STILL in Book !
Good enough for me; Cerebellum ROCKS !
