Ginkgo's blunders against Shredder in WSCC

Post by Uri Blass » Tue Jul 07, 2015 6:05 am

Shredder was in totally hopeless position but saved a draw only thanks to some weakness of the opponent.

Without this draw Ginkgo could be the world software champion.

Re: Ginkgo's blunders against Shredder in WSCC

Why exactly do you call those moves "blunders"?
Because they are considered 50cp worse by Stockfish? (that's what multipv is good for btw)
Obviously Ginkgo isn't SF or Houdini so it simply chose different moves and it still finished ahead of Komodo (speaking of WCSC),
the biggest "disappointment" of the championship because they naturally came to win (especially the main event on unlimited hw).

I call them blunders because it seems that they missed a win and are wrong based on more than one top engine.

More than +3 seems to be obviously a win for black and I think that the difference is more than 50cp if you search deep enough in multi-pv

I know that Ginkgo finished ahead of komodo but it could win WCSC in case of beating Shredder.

I agree with Martin here and by the way your conclusion is simply wrong.

I guess there are some other games and positions where you'll find more "blunders", which may change the result and tournament table.

So, your thoughts ends up in a "butterfly effect" and then i would say you're lost in space. :P

This was a tournament and no rating list. Shredder is the champoin. Point.

"lost in translation" regards

I can explain also why 47...f5 could be better than the game move and probably winning.

There is a principle that it is better not to trade pawns when you have material advantage.

There may be more mistakes that could change the result but this mistake in a game between first place and second place is more important.

I remember that I looked in the game live and thought it should be an easy win for black in the level of top programs(even before analyzing it with stockfish and houdini).

Stockfish certainly "feels" that Rad5 is much better than Qc5 here:

Because they are considered 50cp worse by Stockfish? (that's what multipv is good for btw)
Stockfish certainly "feels" that Rad5 is much better than Qc5 here:

Yes, after 1000 seconds of thinking :) (ok this is mpv 4 but still).
I hope you guys realize that engines have limited time budget in a real game ;)

You can pretend as much as you like, but it is as obvious as grass is green that Ginkgo blundered. Why is another question, but difference is simply to large and obvious from the first iteration that can not be defended with different design or style of the engine.
