Hiarcs wins 3rd World Chess Software Championship

Post by Gerd Isenberg »

Wow. That was tough. Hiarcs drew versus Junior in the last round, and defended its title as World Chess Software Champion.

Congrats to Mark Uniacke and Harvey Williamson!

Do you think that if Wigan will win British Championship they can say we are Champions league winners? Really funny :)

No way. Hiarcs and Junior? As HG already mentioned in the other thread, those who compete become champion. Over the board chess with blood, sweat and tears.

And also congrats and thanks to all participants, specially the courage for Balázs Jákó to play with Merlin.

Cheers,
Gerd

Anyone who knows anything about computer chess knows that you can buy better and stronger engines like Houdini, Komodo or Rybka, or indeed stronger free options such as Stockfish or Critter.

What are you talking about? A lot of people don´t know reality and will buy Junior or Hiarcs because they say it is world champion, but it is simply marketing lie.

I would hope that most purchasers would be a bit smarter than that. Just some quick research would tell them there are stronger engines out there, some of them free.

If most people would really go by the title, I guess the strong commericials would be a lot more eager to paticipate. Or perhaps not. Because they are afraid that they would lose.

All in all the chances of Houdini to win such an event would not be very good. Especially if it has to face 2400-core opponents. It doesn't really surprise me at all that Robert is shy to compete!

They are all like Bobby Fisher who didn't want to play against Karpov in a world championship match.
