In the game against Arasan, Nightmare sacrificed a rook on f6 with very dangerous threats towards the enemy king, unfortunately Nightmare had not enough material left to make something decisive out of it. Finally the game resulted in a draw with 5 pawns against a rook.

Nightmare was totally out-booked in the game against the Baron and found itself in a hopeless situation, the endgame with 2 pawns less was totally lost. Lucky enough (for Nightmare) the Baron missed a table-base draw and let Nightmare escape.

Congrats to John Dart who finally won the tourney with Arasan.

I guess you think also that there is no reason to organize the chess tournaments that I play in them.

I think the level of modern engines like Arasan and Nightmare is colossal. One can learn a great deal from their games, even if they play far from perfect chess. And sometimes they play better alternatives than the tops.

I am surprised that an engine like AnMon that was once rated 2500, is now rated only 2300...
And look over at a tournament staged by Graham, where Chess Tiger 2007 is closing the ranks (a commercial engine once), below a big stretch of seemingly not very familiar engines...

I think Nightmare might be someone's 'nightmare'.

I do not know about you, Uri, but Movei (I played frequently in the past against a version named 0.(0)8 and a couple of digits more) was definitely one of the interesting engines, in the sense that, in my very personal experience, it was the only engine that did not have a style of its own. Other engines would place their rooks on open files, predominate in attack, create weak pawns, etc., but Movei would just play some moves (most of them good at that), which would not distinguish it in any way in a matter of style. Probably you could share the secret of such a very peculiar behaviour..

I think you are exaggerating. According to my own tests the latest version of Nightmare performs about 250 to 200 Elo points below Houdini 3 and I assume that the rating of the latest Arasan on fast hardware won't be much different.

These tournaments are organized for programmers who like to test their 'amateur' engines against other 'amateur' engines. This gives a lot of information, is very interesting and is a lot of fun.

Watching al those Ippolit clones and derivatives play each other might be interesting for some, but not for all.

But I think this tournament was all the better without any Commercial engines. Sjeng of course was previously commercial, but now isn't.

I guess commercials were free to enter. Personally I don't have any problem with commercial engines entering the tourney if they are based on original code. I also would have liked to see Stockfish and Komodo play.

The tournament is not just for amateurs. Professional programs can enter but this year there weren't any except for Sjeng. Sjeng is quite a strong program running on a cluster. It lost to Arasan largely because of a fault in one of its cluster nodes.
