Hello,
I will be teaching chess to high school kids in September and want them use a software that will be:
Free
Read / write in PGN
Able to use Chess Informant symbols in the annotation.
I want them to annotate their games and send it to me as PGN file.
ChessBase Light based on CB 6 is just the program but I am not so sure that it will work on Win 7 or 8.
I used Jose and Scid but do not find them as good as CB Light. Any recommendations?
Sincerely,
Freeware PGN software with Chess Informant symbols?

ChessBase Light if it works in WIN 7 ( win 8, Iám not probe).
You can consider trying Chess Assistant ligth:
http://chessok.com/?page_id=26712
Visually similar to Chessbase ligth, but as this with limitations. Freeware.
Probe it ChessX
http://chessx.sourceforge.net/
( name enigmatic for a teenager. )
Greetings.

Chess Assistant Light looks very nice but it does not allow me to create a new database. I downloaded CA Light 7.1 which fits me quite well except for the Informant symbol notation. I could not figure out how to arrange the fonts for it for the annotation box.velmarin wrote:ChessBase Light if it works in WIN 7 ( win 8, I am not sure).kaissa wrote:

Greetings.
ChessX only allows verbal comments, no Informant style notations.
Thank you very much for your help.

Hmmm... there's no Windows version of Scidb yet.
I've updated Scid vs PC to use SCID's annotation code recently, in case that's any help. For the time being it's only available as a beta update to the latest release http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvsp ... p/download

ChessPad at http://wmlsoftware.com/chesspad.html seems to be a good candidate.
