Arasan test suite additions

Post by jdart »

I have been accumulating some test positions that I am planning to add to my Arasan test suite. I have posted some of them here previously but not all of them (some were posted by others). Currently I have 50 - EPD follows. I think all of these have singular valid solutions but it's possible some have multiple solutions or that the given best move is not actually best. I am still evaluating them. Feedback welcome.

Critter-1.6a (8 threads, 2GB Hash, 300 sec/position) gets all of these except for the two above.

[D]r3k3/1p4p1/1Bb1Bp1p/P1p1bP1P/2Pp2P1/3P4/5K2/4R3 w - - bm g5

Critter chose Bd5.

[D]8/5pk1/7p/P4RpP/6P1/6K1/5P2/r7 w - - bm Kh2 Kg2

Critter chose Kf3.

I'll have Critter re-analyze these two.

Thanks, will correct.

Btw. Arasan itself (my current development version) solved 24/50 at 5 minutes/move.

Some of the endgame positions probably require tablebases to solve.

In my testing so far, the following positions were especially difficult:

Code: Select all

r3k3/1p4p1/1Bb1Bp1p/P1p1bP1P/2Pp2P1/3P4/5K2/4R3 w - - bm g5; id "arasan15.201"; c0 "Nakamura-Giri, FIDE Grand Prix, London 2012";

8/1Kp2rkp/1pR5/pPb3p1/P2p2P1/3R1P2/8/8 w - - bm Rd1; id "arasan15.230"; c0 "Umansky-Rittner, World Champions Jubilee 2001";
8/5pk1/7p/P4RpP/6P1/6K1/5P2/r7 w - - bm Kh2 Kg2; id "arasan15.232"; c0 "Leko-Anand, Linares 2003";
r2q1rk1/2p2ppp/pb1p1n2/n3p3/P2PP3/2P2NN1/R4PPP/2BQ1RK1 w - - bm Bg5; id "arasan15.233"; c0 "Carlsen-Beliavsky, Corus-B Wijk aan Zee 2006";
r1b1r1k1/pp3ppp/4p1n1/q1ppP1B1/6QP/P1PB3R/2P1KPP1/R7 w - - bm h5; id "arasan15.248"; c0 "Bologan-Vaganian, EU Club Cup 2006";
I like the Carlsen position very much: that was a killer move by Carlsen. I also enjoy Bologan's games: he is a very aggressive attacking player.

I'll have Critter re-analyze these two.
Critter eventually switches to g5, and suggests 1. g5 hxg5 2. h6 gxh6 3. Rxe5 fxe5 4. f6 Bd7 5. f7+ Ke7 6. Bxd7.

[D]r7/1p1BkP2/1B5p/P1p1p1p1/2Pp4/3P4/5K2/8 b - - 0 6

Here Giri played Kxd7 and lost. Critter suggests Kxf7 instead, giving

[D]r7/1p1B1k2/1B5p/P1p1p1p1/2Pp4/3P4/5K2/8 w - - 0 7

Does White still win?

Bf5! With the idea Be4 to win the b7 pawn and controlled the h and g pawns ...
The 2 bishops seem too strong for me ...

Yes, this is the same plan that occurred to me. Haven't had time to really analyze it, and I'm not a strong player in any case.

Re: Arasan test suite additions (2nd draft)

Some changes:

1. Replace duplicate position with this one:

8/2k5/2PrR1p1/7p/5p1P/5P1K/6P1/8 w - - bm Rxd6; id "arasan15.243"; c0 "Topalov-Short, Madrid Magistral 1997"; c1 "mate in 36";

2. Change arasan15.213 to an "am" position.

3. Replace position arasan15.209 because there is another good move (Rb6) that was near in score to Rab1. The replacement position is:

8/1B6/3r2p1/5p1p/5P1P/4k1P1/8/6K1 b - - bm g5; id "arasan15.209"; c0 "R. Kholmov, 1973";

(I believe this was posted earlier and is quite difficult)

Thank Jon. Your test suite is very interesting, and very difficult! Also, it reminds me that I need to fix my EPD parser (DiscoCheck incorrectly expects a ';' before the 'bm').

My engine DiscoCheck scores horribly bad on this test (10s/move 64 MB Hash)

Code: Select all

$ ./Engines/discocheck_3.7.1 ./arasan.epd hash=64 time=10000
(...)
result = 6/50
PS: My computer isn't very powerful, but I doubt it would make much difference.
Theory and practice sometimes clash. And when that happens, theory loses. Every single time.
