Shall we update Talkchess' software?

We are considering updating Talkchess' software, at last. The software is nearly twelve years old, with just a minor bugfixed revision that is about 8 years old. But in order to get ChessUSA do that for us, we need a vast support from all you Talkchess' citizens.

The benefits of the operation would be many:
- easy, automatized updating process
- finally up-to-date with modern versions of PHPBB
- ability to use many plugins (starting with the much needed pgn-replayer)
- immense list of bugs corrected
- improved security
- improved moderation tools
- and so on. Please take a look at the change log for complete details.

The only draw back, for a few users, is that the thread view would be unavailable. But this could be brought back in the future, and it's a minor draw-back considering all the improvements. Also, no users would be annoyed by long threads, like they are with thread view.

It's a valid response, we have to respect everyone's point of view here. To me the answer seems obvious but there is the thread view issue.

I guess if posters make judicious use of quoting, a "flat" view is not a big deal. However, your statement does beg the question -- If thread view can be implemented in the future, why could it not be implemented from the start? Just wondering...

Maybe I'm wrong, but IIRC the thread view wasn't part of the original PHPBB either: it was a special plugin hand-made by some users. I think Chris Conkie was involved in this, so maybe he would tell us more.

What I meant is that what have been done once could certainly be done again. If there are enough people who are asking for it.

I ask for thread view. I nearly never use flat view.

In flat view it is hard to see who answered to a post. Therefore people
quote far too much. And it still does not work.

In thread view this is easy to see and you can also see in what part of the
thread a post belongs. Typically a long thread has some active topics
and a lot of dead ends.
In thread view I can see from the color of the links which post I have
already seen and which are new.

I am not sure if the thread view issue is important enough to vote against
new software. Therefore I have not voted (yet).
