Why do people take chess so seriously?

Post by Uri »

I mean it's just a rather stupid game.

People really spend a lot of money on this game. I mean people buy very expensive computer hardware and quite expensive programs just to be able to defeat others at chess.

But when you think about it, why spend tons of money on a game?

Chess is a very inexpensive activity. Most people have computers now, they do not buy them to play chess. In addition, a chess board and pieces are cheap and the software is cheap and so are Internet club dues, you can play for free at FICS. So I think your statement is bunk!

Yeah and because of that you browse a forum that is all about a game you consider rather stupid ...

Done with posting in all the other forums about games you consider less stupid already ?

Can be cheap and can be not. I guess many people here along the years has expended a sizable amount of bucks. But that's not the important thing. As far as you can get fun, that's ok. Of course what is stupid is to give to it too much importance. But then there is nothing that can resist the judgement about importance.

You can say "it's just a stupid X" about anything. It's one of the weakest statements you can possibly make about something.

People take X seriously because they like it / it gives them a living / they think it's a good thing to do / etc.

Chess is one of a number of games that can keep the mind sharp until old age. Any mind game is not stupid. It would like calling weight lifting stupid or all sports stupid.

Mind games are a workout for the gray matter

Maybe you enjoy crossword puzzles, perhaps?

My wife used to say i was married to a chess board. :-).
I could spend 7 days a week in my spare time playing chess with 200-300 folks at diff. chess clubs. I do enjoy chess now with a computer as before there were no computer. West lake park in L.A. Ca. was my favorite spot. There were a lot of G.M.'s who played there.
I have spent tons of money on fishing gear that is crazy.
Care for a game without a program? :-)
