Did Anand miss a win in Game 3?

Post by Houdini »

In Game 3 of the WC match, the following position was reached after move 33.

[D]2r5/1p2R2p/3P2k1/p4p2/7R/1P3P2/P2r2P1/1K6 w - -
Instead of Anand's 34.Rc7 the alternative 34.d7! looks very promising.

What is your and your engine's opinion?

With a precise endgame technique from black's side, winning the game won't be easy for black....

BTW,I am surprised by your reasonable good knowledge of the game of chess....

I've always had the impression that you're a lousy chess player but you proved me wrong....

Still,I don't like you as a personality,sorry for that 8-)

It is an easy win for engines but not so easy for humans like Anand.

2850 cannot see it.
you must be at least 3000+ to see it.

Hello Robert:

I liked the first two games, but the third was superb to my patzer eyes. I am using an old, slow Intel Pentium D930 (3 GHz) with 256 MB of hash under Arena 2.0.1. I gave few time to Quazar.

So, +0.7 from white POV at depth 23 (Quazar evals and search depths remind me a lot to SF ones). Only 34.- ..., Rcc2 and 34.- ..., Rd1+ are seriously considered.

I have no opinion because this position is simply very difficult for my limited knowledge of chess; I let you to draw your own conclussions in view of this fast Quazar analysis.

It would be fantastic if you post an analysis with Multi-PV = 2 (Rcc2 and Rd1+) with the current development version of Houdini. This is a great opportunity to ask you if you have managed to improve a little more Houdini since your last report, where you claimed a nice 40 Elo improvement over Houdini 2. Good luck with the development: I find very interesting the fact of making Houdini able of use bitbases (like Scorpio EGBB).

Regards from Spain.

Re: Did Anand miss a win in Game 3?

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Rainbow Serpent will play it but does not see it as winning. Anand's intuition is usually pretty good but he did not play it. But he has not been in the best of form in recent tournaments so he may have lacked the "panache" to play this move. But may guess is Anand just did not see a win.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Again as I wrote above without even using a chess engine,Mr.Houdini has rushed a little bit so early to claim that Anand had missed an easy win....

Maybe Kasparov or Fischer could have earned the full point here for white but this is of course a pure speculation
