By an incredible coincidence today the ending of queen vs. rook and two pawns (not connected, but seemingly safe) arose in the top level game between Svidler and Howell. Svidler played it amazingly well, creating multiple zugwangs, and won the game.
Amazing coincidence it is

Regarding the tablebase win in the queen vs. rook and two pawns, it's quite surprising, but believable due to zugzwang. If the defending king were close to the pawns it should be a fortress draw. I was not aware that any ending of queen vs. rook and two connected passed pawns could be won when nothing was lose and there were no threats, but I learned something new today.
Connie plays the virtually Forced..
54..Kg6

I anticipated correctly...Now the the subtle move 55. Qe7! and the Zugzwang is well in motion.

The Connie will have to make a concession here. To avoid tossing a pawn I think after 55.Qe7! the Connie will play 55..a5!? If so the King can now move closer with 56. Ke3! with the ability to switch direction to the square f4.

Noose Tightening Regards,

P.S. The Connie for it's day and limited search has done better than I expected in the overall sense.

I play 55Qe7, severely restricting Black's options. Tomorrow I go to Boca Raton Florida for the US Senior Championship, but I should be able to continue the game without much interruption.

Connie wanted to play 55..Ra5 here which even i can see loses yet another pawn by force in a few more moves

Connie has no chance to draw let alone win this game so i will 55..RESIGN for Connie

Well Played
Thanks for the game and the day to day comments
Good Luck At The US Senior Championship Regards!

A little premature Steve. It would have been nice to see a few more moves before you resigned. Maybe you should change your mind as this little experiment has been a really entertaining thread.
Well done to Terry & Larry :-)

Indeed, though it is Larry who was supposed to play against Connie.

What a pity !
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

FINAL POSITION

Thank you. I enjoyed the game and learned a couple things. Connie played most of the game at Expert level, except for the awful recapture with the queen on g6. But I suppose most "A" players also play most of their games at Expert level except for occasional "D" player errors!
