Incredibly crazy game from Leiden: Deep Sjeng - The King

Post by Gian-Carlo Pascutto »

An incredible game. After a slightly cramped opening, The King speculatively sacrificed a pawn for massive pressure against the white king. After black also got his king trapped in the center, a huge slug-fest ensued and black got the upper hand in the complications. At some point Deep Sjeng had a fail low of almost 2 pawns (at move 22, the triple sacrifice after f5 suddenly turned out not to work) and didn't manage to resolve it even after a time extension. The King won an quality and eagerly traded down into a winning endgame. But as it turned out, it traded just too early and should have activated its h rook first. Deep Sjeng managed to put it definitely out of play and was suddenly a piece up. A gradual strangling eventually allowed a won KRPPKR endgame.

By far one of the most crazy computer chess games I have ever played.

very cool game. thank you. can you tell us about the hardware used in this game ? the king is known to be a very tricky tactical program.

DS has a big hardware advantage as it is using a cluster. Not sure what the King is using but I think a Quadcore. DS had an excellent game against Rybka Cluster where it put a lot of pressure on Rybka, but somehow lost the thread and overreached. DS looks like it has improved quite a bit, and the fact that it is being tested as a cluster makes it a very interesting program to have. Hopefully it will be on sale soon.

As far as I know was the King running on Intel core 2duo, on 2 threads.
