Like my ChessGUI, the other ChessGUI is also a chess interface.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

I just want to know the strength (in ELO) of the carpet cleaning machine.....

:P

I also want you both to know that Micro-Max and Tornado could have a match.

It's in the bag.....so to speak.

who is the author? did he not know there is allready exist this name Tornado by me ?
Hi,

I think the author of the program was from Australia. English was not his first language either, so he must have moved there from somewhere else. I remember it was hard to reach him, since Australian time was so far advanced from the East Coast time zone where I live (same time as New York City).

One game his program played is found here

http://www.gothicchess.com/javagames/db ... 3/game.htm

It made some unusual moves.

What was interesting was that some other program entered also , "Gothic Shredder", and it was not by the author of the Shredder Chess program. He did email me and ask me to have the author of that program change its name, and he did.

I think these programmers were either new to programming and unaware of the existence of other engines, or just "fans" of the engines maybe.

Since there are so many names out there, it is tough to know which has been taken already.

My own chess program, The Sniper, was out in 1987. I know other people have used the name (for other than chess also) but there's not much you can do about it if you don't own the right to the name.

Hello Engin,

You have a great name for an "engine designer" :)

If your program was created first, you have the right to have the name "Tornado". Since the author of "GothicTornado" cannot be reached, I don't know what to tell you.

You should keep your name and not change it.

He should have to make his name something else.

For now, there's not much we can do. His program is NOT commercial so we don't have to worry about it.

There were some great Gothic Chess games at the Gothic Chess Computer World Championships. Here is one where Gothic Vortex won with 2 Chancellors!

http://www.gothicchess.com/javagames/db ... 1/game.htm

And a checkmate in 27 moves was in this game:

http://www.gothicchess.com/javagames/db ... 7/game.htm

And my favorite game was this mate in 28:

In Gothic Chess there is a much greater range for "original" play. The more clever the evaluation function, the more intersting the outcome.

Chess Cyclone?

Post by hgm »

I can add that the World's number 2 XiangQi engine is called Cyclone, and that it has nothing to do with the Cyclone Chess engine that was released recently:

http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/icga/t ... php?id=184

If I understood it correctly, this Cyclone is a commercial engine. So having the same name for unrelated engines for different games is a quite common phenomenon. The Cyclone we know might actualy use the name illegally, if the company that sells the commercial Cyclone registered the name as a trademark in Europe or U.S. But chances are that it only is interested in Asian markets.

This is what you get when you pick meaningful names. To reduce the risk of name confusion, the XiangQi engine I am currently writing will be called HaQiKi D (pronounced HaCheeKee-Day).

Matthias.
I face that problem too with my engines "Jan Willem" and "Frank-Walter" ;-)

Hi Ed,

Sorry that I derived at the conclusion that you were the author of the Gothic Chess Tornado program ;)

But atleast it opened my eyes for GC, looks interesting, while 960 chess never managed to catch my interest. GC seems to expand the possibilities of true chess, and still remain "fixed and under merely the same rules :)

Best,
Henrik
