If a version of LearningLemming is released with learning disabled, should its name be changed?

Lemming name

Post by BubbaTough »

Hi,

When I eventually release a public version of LearningLemming (and after finding another bug that has been bothering me for a long time we seem to be inching closer to a release) it will probably have learning disabled, but generate a tolearn.txt file that people can send me to conduct learning on my own computer.

If I do release such a version, that version will not really be learning so should I rename it?

I'm partial to Snow Lemming, but I would rather have a learning version.

I voted "Lemming" although I do like the sound of "Learning Lemming", It kinda lyrically rhyme.

Good to know that the version will be released finally, I'm sure you will get a lot of reports, bugs, stats, games etc in as short time as possible.

Good luck!

I like the current name, the whole learning animal thing fascinates me.

Silly suggestion, Learning Goat.

I suggest LazyLemming, it's so lazy it doesn't want to learn ;)

Why is it being released without learning, though?

LazyLemming is not bad. I am not very happy with the learning yet, but if I wait until I am, I may never release this sucker...as my development time is expected to be quite low for the next few years.

Before I release a learning version I would like to come up with a method for combining the learning done on everyone's computer in some useful way, that is resistant to some minor number of bad learn files. This is not that easy, and is lower in priority right now than adding SMP support, which may also take a long time. If I can get learning working this way, there is a chance for some seriously cool effects if folks can be convinced to let me regularly harvest their learn files in exchange for a new "collective knowledge" file.

The primary learning method I use, by the way, learns from conducting post game analysis, or studying games of others, and is done in a separate program that creates a file that LearningLemming reads when a new game is started. That means the learning program uses serious resources, and is not achieved via book-keeping (tracking wins/losses, memorizing positions, etc.) during games like in most computer chess learning. People that do not want a separate program sitting around on their computer sucking up resources may not want Lemming learning anyway. I know most testers don't :).

Well, it is available on ICC to test against with learning on RIGHT NOW! The author also accepts grudge match appointments (on ICC) against all comers.
