Glaurung Lodz 2007 (unofficial Windows distribution)

Post by Denis P. Mendoza »

I had quote Tord saying, "Actually, not releasing a Windows executable of Glaurung Lodz 2007 was a conscious choice: I don't want to confuse the poor testers with too many very similar versions". But since a lot of us here are Windows users, it was a challenge to compile a test engine of this version. It was nice that Tord gave me the approval to distribute an unofficial Glaurung_Lodz_2007 for private use. So unless he himself releases it publicly (as official version), people won't see it on the ranking lists. Fair enough! I just also want to see comments on what others think of this engine.

As Tord also mentioned..."Glaurung Lodz 2007 is actually very close to Glaurung 2 - ε/5; the only changes worth mentioning are some new endgame knowledge for KRP vs KR and KRPP vs KRP endgames, a very minor improvement in passed pawn evaluation, and slightly more intelligent time managment in ponder on games. I don't think Lodz 2007 is measurably stronger than 2 - ε/5, at least not with pondering disabled".

Let's just see how the champion plays with Strelka!

Hi, thanks for this.

Too bad that this new Glaurung does not find faster than its predecessor the 1.h4!! 2.Ke2!(g4 may win too) winning sequence....
OK it's faster by 8 seconds but that's not much.

Still does not solve the following (under logical time in my PC) but it will solve it eventually.... :D I hope with the next release.
This position has many tricks and a very thin line of white moves that win by force so i give that excuse to Glaurung. :D

Tord is always modest about his improvements. I guess it will definitely be better.

Hello George,

Thanks for the positions. Glaurung 2 is usually quite bad at all sorts of test positions (in fact, it is generally quite bad at everything except for winning games, where it does surprisingly well), so it doesn't surprise me that it has difficulties finding the right moves in your two positions.

Nevertheless, I will have a look at the positions. If I am lucky, the positions could help me to discover some unknown bug.

I haven't made any tests with the Lodz version, but considering the changes compared to 2 - ε/5, it is fairly obvious that there cannot be a big difference in strength.

In most games, KRP vs KR and KRPP vs KRP endgames don't occur at all, and the new evaluation patterns I added are only relevant for tiny subsets of these endgames (KRP vs KR with the attacking rook behind the pawn, the pawn far advanced, and the defending king badly placed; and KRPP vs KRP without a passed pawn, and with the defending king well placed).

The only other evaluation change is that for doubled passed pawns, only the frontmost pawn on the file is given a bonus. This is also not relevant in the majority of chess games, and can't possibly have a big impact on the strength.

The third and last change is that I have attempted to improve the time managment in ponder on games. I am not sure this attempt was successful: In Lodz Glaurung always seemed to play far too quickly, and usually had more than half an hour left on the clock at the end of the game (the time control was 60 minutes/game).

Some programs maybe solve this much faster, but I think these are not easy testpositions though. I have tried the first one with Alaric, on Athlon 2009 MHz with 256 Mb;

Alaric with Deep IIb settings is a bit faster but also gets it at twenty ply:

Some programs I see choose 1.h4+ much faster, with a transposition of 1.Nb5 c3 2.h4+ Kh6 what Alaric also quickly has as PV to 1. h4+ Kh6 2. Nb5 c3 but that does not really count as a solution I think!

King of tactics Hiarcs 11.1 in the first testposition, only at 19 plies deep 2.Ke2 emerges in the PV:

Tord Romstad wrote: Thanks for the positions. Glaurung 2 is usually quite bad at all sorts of test positions (in fact, it is generally quite bad at everything except for winning games, where it does surprisingly well),
Really?
From my little experience with Glaurung (i use it form Glaurung 1.2.1 and after) i think it it good enough with some testpositions.
Many times it does not find the solution but it's clever enough when you show it the solution to give a high score immediately understanding what is happening....

Anyway here is the analysis of these 2 positions(the second one is extremely interesting):

Position-1:
[D]r7/Np1r1p1p/1n3Pp1/p2pP1k1/PbpP1R2/6P1/R1P3NP/5K2 w - - 0 1
Here 1.h4+! wins by force while 1.Nb5?! gives the chance to black to escape playing 1...h5.

After 1.h4+! Kh6(1...Kh5 2.g4 Kh6 3.Ke2! white wins) 2.Ke2 now:
-2...Nxa4 3.Rxa4 is crushing.
-2...Rxa7 3.g4! and then c3! win immediately.
-2...c3 3.g4 is crushing too....
-2...Rdd8 3.g4! Nd7 4.g5+(Nb5 is good too) Kh5 5.Kf3! Nxe5 6.dxe5 Bc3 7.Nb5 Bxe5 8.c3! white wins.

----------------------------------------

Position-2:
[D]2rr2k1/pp1q1bp1/4p2p/2npP3/5N1P/1Q4P1/PP3P2/1BRR2K1 w - - 0 1
Here 1.Rxc5!! wins by force! After 1...Rxc5 2.Qd3 we have the lines:

2...d4 3.Qh7+ Kf8 4.Qh8+ Ke7 5.Qxg7 Rg8 6.Qf6+ Ke8 7.Bh7 Rg4 8.Qh8+ Ke7 9.Ng6+ Rxg6 10.Bxg6 Bxg6+ 11.Qf6+ Ke8 12.Qxg6+ Kd8 13.Qxh6 +-
2...Rdc8 3.Qh7+ Kf8 4.Ng6+ Bxg6 5.Bxg6 Re8 6.Rd4 Rc4 7.Rxc4 dxc4 8.Qh8+ Ke7 9.Qxg7+ Kd8 10.Qxd7 Kxd7 11.Bxe8 Kxd8 12.f3 1-0
2...Re8 3.Qh7+ Kf8 4.Ng6+ Bxg6 5.Bxg6 Rc8 6.Rd4 Ke7 7.Bxe8 Rxe8(7...Kxe8 8.Rg4! g5 9.Qxh6 1-0) 8.Rg4! 1-0

But the most interesting lines come from:
2...Kf8 3.Qh7 now the only option is 3...Bf8.

Of course there is 3...d4 also but this loses too:
-3...d4 4.Qh8+ Ke7 5.Qxg7 Rg8 6.Qf6+ Ke8 7.Bh7 Rg4 8.Qh8+ Ke7 9.Ng6+ Rxg6 10.Bxg6 Bxg6 11.Qf6+ Ke8 12.Qxg6+ Kd8 13.Qxh6 +-

So we have:
-3...Bf8 4.Qh8 Rc4 and now not the bad 5.Rxd5? but: 5.Ng6!
Glaurung Lodz seems to prefer 5.Rxd5? here after 3 minutes :-(
But 5.Rxd5? exd5 6.e6 Rxf4 7.exd7 Re4 8.Bxe4 dxe4 and black is fine.
[D]3r1kbQ/pp1q2p1/4p2p/3pP3/2r2N1P/6P1/PP3P2/1B1R2K1 w - - 0 5

Here after 5.Ng6+! Kf7 6.Kg2!! black is doomed:
-6...Qc6 7.Rd3 Kxg6 8.Rf3 and 1-0
[D]3r2bQ/pp4p1/2q1p1kp/3pP3/2r4P/5RP1/PP3PK1/1B6 b - - 0 8

-6...d4 7.Rd3 and here again white can't capture the Knight since white has the amazing 8.Rf3!! 1-0
[D]3r2bQ/pp1q1kp1/4p1Np/4P3/2rp3P/3R2P1/PP3PK1/1B6 b - - 0 7
After 7...Kxg6 8.Rf3!! Kh5 and white has a mate in 10 with 9.Bd3.

Black has also the option of 8...d3 9.Bxd3 Qxd3 10.Rxd3 Rxd3 11.Qxg8 1-0

After 7.Rd3 black instead of capturing the Knight he can play:
7...Qd5+ 8.Rf3+ Qxf3 9.Kxf3 d3 10.Nf4 1-0

So what is left for black is:
-6...Qe8 7.h5 so:

--7...Bh7 8.Qxh7 Qg8 9.Qxg8 Kxg8 10.f4 +-
--7...d4 8.Rd3 Qc6+ 9.Rf3+ Qxf3+ 10.Kxf3 d3 11.Nf4 Rcd4 12.Nxd3 Rxd3 13.Bxd3 Rxd3 14.Kg2! +-
--7...Qc6 8.Rd3 d4+ Rf3+ the same with above +-
After his son's birth they've asked him:
"Is it a boy or girl?"
YES! He replied.....

The mediafire link for Glaurung Lodz version is no longer working. Can somebody post another link that works thx.
