I had quote Tord saying, "Actually, not releasing a Windows executable of Glaurung Lodz 2007 was a conscious choice: I don't want to confuse the poor testers with too many very similar versions". But since a lot of us here are Windows users, it was a challenge to compile a test engine of this version. It was nice that Tord gave me the approval to distribute an unofficial Glaurung_Lodz_2007 for private use. So unless he himself releases it publicly (as official version), people won't see it on the ranking lists. Fair enough! I just also want to see comments on what others think of this engine.

As Tord also mentioned..."Glaurung Lodz 2007 is actually very close to Glaurung 2 - ε/5; the only changes worth mentioning are some new endgame knowledge for KRP vs KR and KRPP vs KRP endgames, a very minor improvement in passed pawn evaluation, and slightly more intelligent time managment in ponder on games. I don't think Lodz 2007 is measurably stronger than 2 - ε/5, at least not with pondering disabled".

Hello George,

Thanks for the positions. Glaurung 2 is usually quite bad at all sorts of test positions (in fact, it is generally quite bad at everything except for winning games, where it does surprisingly well), so it doesn't surprise me that it has difficulties finding the right moves in your two positions.

Nevertheless, I will have a look at the positions. If I am lucky, the positions could help me to discover some unknown bug.

Tord is always modest about his improvements. I guess it will definitely be better.

I haven't made any tests with the Lodz version, but considering the changes compared to 2 - ε/5, it is fairly obvious that there cannot be a big difference in strength.

In most games, KRP vs KR and KRPP vs KRP endgames don't occur at all, and the new evaluation patterns I added are only relevant for tiny subsets of these endgames (KRP vs KR with the attacking rook behind the pawn, the pawn far advanced, and the defending king badly placed; and KRPP vs KRP without a passed pawn, and with the defending king well placed).

The only other evaluation change is that for doubled passed pawns, only the frontmost pawn on the file is given a bonus. This is also not relevant in the majority of chess games, and can't possibly have a big impact on the strength.

The third and last change is that I have attempted to improve the time managment in ponder on games. I am not sure this attempt was successful: In Lodz Glaurung always seemed to play far too quickly, and usually had more than half an hour left on the clock at the end of the game (the time control was 60 minutes/game).

Some programs I see choose 1.h4+ much faster, with a transposition of 1.Nb5 c3 2.h4+ Kh6 what Alaric also quickly has as PV to 1. h4+ Kh6 2. Nb5 c3 but that does not really count as a solution I think!

From my little experience with Glaurung (i use it form Glaurung 1.2.1 and after) i think it it good enough with some testpositions.
Many times it does not find the solution but it's clever enough when you show it the solution to give a high score immediately understanding what is happening....

Anyway here is the analysis of these 2 positions(the second one is extremely interesting):

Position-1:

Here 1.h4+! wins by force while 1.Nb5?! gives the chance to black to escape playing 1...h5.

-2...Nxa4 3.Rxa4 is crushing.
-2...Rxa7 3.g4! and then c3! win immediately.
-2...c3 3.g4 is crushing too....
-2...Rdd8 3.g4! Nd7 4.g5+(Nb5 is good too) Kh5 5.Kf3! Nxe5 6.dxe5 Bc3 7.Nb5 Bxe5 8.c3! white wins.

Glaurung Lodz seems to prefer 5.Rxd5? here after 3 minutes
