Nalimov Tablebases

Post by Terry Giles »

Hi Chess friends,

I wish to use the 3, 4 and 5 man Nalimov tablebases with my chess program. I have downloaded all the 'emd' files from Bob Hyatt's site - here...

ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/TB/3-4-5/

But there are also some other 'tbs' files available here...

ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/TB/tbs/

Do I need to download these, what is their function?

Many thanks for your help,
Terry

tbs files are not needed. They are "summary" files that give information such as deepest mate, etc. They are not used by the chess engines...

Thanks Bob,

I ran a few end game test positions after installing the tablebases and all seems to be working well.

To test the TBs for integrity, all you need is to compare the md5's of the 290 files (from the 3-4-5). With the 6 man TBs that are shared through P2P, that is a big problem because one incorrect file is shared with others before they realise they have damaged files.

I use the chess program "Wilhem" to check the tbs. See it at:
