Question on distributing testing copies of an Android chess app

I used to give out an Apk of lantern chess from 2010-2013 that was not in play store. But it later occurred to me anyone could have taken it and submitted it to the play store in their name.

I want to distribute APKs of my Diamond Chess on Android as i reach stages. Stage one is Chat only, Stage two adds a playing board but no advance features like engine analysis etc.

Am I correct in thinking if i create an App listing and upload my first APK and do everything short of hitting release that would register the APK in my name as my app from then on and i can distribute copies on a web page?
