Indeed. But with the hierarchical naming convention an engine could simply have all advanced options start with the word 'Advanced': "Advanced XXX", "Advanced YYY" etc. The GUI could then just create a button 'Advanced', and when the user presses it, it woudl pop up a child dialog displaying options 'XXX', 'YYY' etc.
No protocol extension needed. And even in GUI's that don't implement hierarchical settings dialogs, the options would be recognizable as 'Advanced'.
