So from now until the tourney it will be available for testing.
Crap... $%#$&#. My internet connection was down for a couple of hours and a half until now (together with my phone and cable). Well, I will participate next time.

Re: On-Line Blitz Tourney, small report

Post by Stan Arts »

The tournament was fun, hopefully soon again.

Some..memorable moments, good and bad.

First of all the HD of my main computer started producing memorable death metal earlier this week, and I had to resort to my ancient p4 2.4GHz single core backup.

Tinker - Neurosis , something you don't see everyday. Bishops just got traded on g3 and this position arised.:
[D] 2rq2k1/7p/p3b1p1/2pp2P1/3pp3/N5P1/PP4P1/1RQ1N1K1 b - - 0 25

My engine and me think black is quite good here, a piece down against the huge central block and tripled kingpawns. But as happens more often my engine can't get through the tactical details against the strong searching Tinker. And 20 moves later:
[D] 8/5bkp/8/5pP1/P1p5/2N3P1/6PK/8 w - - 0 47

white has a dangerous a pawn, my engine knows that and goes to catch it with it's king, but that's a mistake as it shouldn't abandon king side either. Perhaps it could be held with bishop alone as advancing the knight leaves the c pawn unprotected and both sides can't really activate king without danger.

Re: Final Announcement On-Line Blitz Tourney

I would still like to hear some feedback from those that have been using the WinBoard trial version with the experimental -autoKibitz option.

Do you think this is a convenient feature? (i.e. suppressing all engine kibitz from the main ICS window, and diverting the opponent's kibitz to the engine-output window.)

Are there better solutions?

Did it even work correctly?

Thanks for running this event which worked out amazingly well I thought, especially for the first time.

As to -autoKibitz, it seems like it is a problem with pondering.
Tinker outputs certain information in kibs that I would like to see and cannot since as soon as pondering starts, Tinker's own engine output window is cleared and updated with the pondering search results. Also, there is no need for the other engine's kibs to appear anywhere but the ICS window.

I think the best solution is for engines to add their own pondering, and of course to not "spam" the ICS window with PVs for every ply. I have never had a problem chatting with others during a game with just Tinker and its opponent properly kibbing at the end of each move.

Finally, any progress on the Polyglot book support when the engine is white (works when engine is black)?
