Nope, i don't say there was a big time differ which engines comes first. My informations based on personal talks with Tim and the first first xboard developer (can't remember the name).
Gnuchess was first. But most of the effort was spent on Crafty as TIm and I exchanged email on a daily basis. I sent him many patches to xboard, and he also sent me many, not to mention the new features he added with protocol version 2 as well...
