AMD VS INTEL

Post by katzparov »

Is The AMD ATHLON still regarded as best for Chess Programs.

I already have an AMD ATHLON dual-core 5000+
I'm looking at purchasing an
AMD ATHLON dual-core 6000+

Am I wasting my money going from a 5000+ to 6000+ ?

Also, how do the dual-cores perform with the Deep Versions of Chess Programs like Deep Fritz 10 or Deep Rybka 2.32 compared to the NON Deep Versions?

I am looking at making a purchase online tonight, so any QUICK replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Intel has the edge at the moment. Right now, you can't buy a top-of-the-line AMD that outperforms a top-of-the-line Intel at chess.

That's the quick answer.

It is just not worth IMO going from an Athlon 5000+ to an Athlon 6000+. The extra performance is almost meaningless! Yes, it is a waste of money.

Buying a quad, even a cheap one would make more sense. Especially if you run MP engines that scale well to 4 cores. But, be careful what engines that you plan to run, because, not all engines are stronger with 4 cores. Some are weaker. Investigate the rating list!
