New idea for a 10 x 8 chess variant!

Post by Michael Sherwin »

I had my chess board set up on one end of my mom's dinning room table when she opened up a package of perfume that she had. The little round bottle of perfume was placed in a flat shallow box with a small round hole in it. The hole was just big enough to hold a pawn with it's top about 2/3rds exposed. I placed a captured pawn in the box and thought, 'I bet that this pawn wished that it had this little fortress when it was alive!'

Anyway, the new variant that was inspired by the preceeding episode is as follows. Place a new piece on each new edge file making a 10 x 8 board. Place a pawn in front. The new piece can move like a king but can not capture. When the left most piece and the current right most pawn are on the same square they become a much more powerful piece. It is the same for the right most piece merging with the left most pawn. The new piece does not impede own sliders, but does impede the enemy.

Maybe someone with a 10 x 8 chess engine can give this a try! :)
