Fischer Random Chess (Chess960) Computer Championship

Post by Kurt22 »

Hi!

So, for fun and because a lot of people are interested in how the engines (especially Leela) do at Chess960, I have started a tournament.

It's 4RR with 16 engines. Nemorino was originally to be included but I couldn't get it working so replaced with SF9. TC is 5+2, hardware is 4 cores CPU and GTX 1060 GPU. Chess960's weird castling rules are off, as most engines don't officially support 960 and this allows it to be played anyway. Reverses of openings will be played.

The tournament can be watched live here:

It won't be on 24/7, so if it's not on check back later. (I'll try to keep it on as much as possible though)

I will post the results here when it finishes. Thanks!

The tournament has finished - here's the results.

(some of my thoughts on the results):

First of all, SFdev did amazing. Somehow the 960 opening positions must give more opportunity for SF to showcase its talent. Interestingly, it failed to beat Komodo though, but went 3.5/4 vs Houdini, and 4/4 vs Fire and Ethereal.

As for Leela, she performed pretty much exactly how she would likely perform on my setup were this not chess960. The loss to Wasp has to hurt, but she also scored 3/4 vs Komodo which is quite nice.

Overall there were quite a few "upsets" in the tournament, which I can only assume was caused by Chess960, though I'm not sure how. Every single engine except SFdev (undefeated) and Arasan (last) was beaten at some point by an engine that ended up finishing below it. Similarly, every single engine except the top 3 was able to beat an engine that ended up finishing above it.
