Talking about the Ponder hit/miss ratio, is there a tool to detect this?

Thanks

Try this:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=001 ... 7540551562

Although I had weird experiences with it. A ponder hit statistics with your database would be awesome!

I realy would like to get and give that data but my full database (1.3GB) failed to load (out of memory), my top 16 database (70 MB) as well as a 2 game database (below) does load but all i get is 0 hits, 0 results ... nothing. It is doing something for a while, I see CPU usage, but it always comes back with no results. (Even the Check for 0s moves) doesn't change a thing).

I haven't used it for years, I don't remember which PGN format it does recognize. I remember this soft even gave some numbers when there were no actual ponder moves in PGN, so I am not sure what to make out of it.

Hello Kai,

Have a look here:

http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopi ... 65&t=62311

The sample rate is low - just one game - but we have a 70% Ponder hit rate for equal opponents. That would mean that more than 8 core Ponder OFF games are a waste already :-)

Second game is 70% as well. It seems many cores are really not that good starting from 8 cores. So 8 core ponder ON gives "better" games than 16 cores Ponder OFF. (For equal opponents on big hardware)

I like that :-)

That's impressive! Ferdinand is very kind, if you ask him, he might write a tool to derive ponder hit statistics. It would be interesting to have all ponder hit numbers for your top 16 database. 70% is VERY high, IIRC 40-50% was the norm. If it is 70% more generally for similar in strength engines, then indeed 8 cores each engine ponder ON is more efficient than 16 cores each engine ponder OFF.

Yes, but those two games were 90 + 30 on 16 cores Ponder ON (32 core Opteron)! That is slightly better than my 5 + 3, 1 core list ;-) I expect a lower P-HIT rate there.

But with some luck we get some statistics on my TOP16 list ...

I ask :
This is the same old question : how does speed translate into Elo ?

Isn't the answer in Andreas' experiment:

http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopi ... 84&start=0

Speed * time = nodes
Identical nodes identical engine 1 core = identical strength

Identical speed * (2 * time) = 2*nodes = doubling
(2 * speed) * time = 2*nodes = doubling

2 * time is equivalent to 2 * speed at everything else equal, and are equal to a doubling. So, Andreas' result is both for twice the time or twice the speed. And his results are in ELO.
