match 3 , the revenge

Post by Hugo »

Hi All

I started a new match, I hope its not boring that I choose Komodo and Houdini3 again. The last match was verry entertaining and had 25 wins out of 50 !!
So now I want to see how both do on more cores. Both engines get 11 cpu and 4GB hashtables this time. 1 cpu I need for live relay.
Conditions:
-Intel 12core machine X5680 @ 3.4GHz, no hyperthreading (2cpu on MoBo)
-4096 Mb hashtables, not EGTB at all
-GUI use small set of Nalimov EGTB (80Gb)
-Hiarcs book, 5 moves, tournament mode off(wide play)
-60min +10sec, ponder OFF

Live:
http://www.clemens-keck.de//screen2/
Replay:
http://www.clemens-keck.de/ReplayZone/match3.htm

enjoy :-)

Hi Clemens.
Many thanks for the nice initiative. It should not be boring at all.
I still put my money on Houdini.

And jokingly, next time maybe it will be the turn of 'Cluster Komodo' :D

Thanks for running these matches. I'm running two similar matches myself (4 and 12 core, one hour + 30" but smaller hash), and so far after 41 games combined I have Komodo two games ahead, while your combined result at the moment is Komodo two games down. Since I am not "neutral" your result is the one that matters, but anyway I am satisfied that they are so close at long time controls as to make it impossible to determine which is stronger without massive testing.

After a few friendly draws now is fire at the board! Game 6 7 8 9 all decided games. Remarkable opening ECO A29: First time that an engine in these matches could win same opening with black and with white! It was Houdini 3. But still Komodo is in the lead with one point.
ReplayZone(+PGN) is updated :-)

Again! Houdini 3 really needs some more heuristics when it comes to rook endgames. It plays way below its level in rook endgames. I guess against weaker opponents or at faster time controls being down a pawn in a rook endgame is no problem, but at LTC with stronger opponents it can be very different. This is really becoming a weakness with Houdini 3 and my guess is that the engine is much stronger if this little backdoor can be fixed.

I agree, but it does take another strong program to expose this weakness. Robert may not have been able to detect this weakness using only ultra fast test games during H3 development.

I'm running a similar match to yours (details differ but fairly similar; slower machine, but one hour plus 30", 12 cores, smaller hash). My results are nearly the same; right now score is tied after 31 games.
But I'm getting better four core results than you did; so far Komodo is + 2 after 30 games compared to your -3 result for 50 games. But I think you used the initial release on that test while I used the newer bugfix one, so it's not exactly the same. Maybe the bugfix version is a bit stronger, and/or it's just sample error.
Thanks again for running these matches!

Best regards,
Larry

Of course, very short time control, not good to make any judgements, but still 40...f5 is very bad, reducing black's king safety (there are still 4 rooks). Otherwise the endgame seems a dead draw.

No judgements, and I think Houdini is awesome. I was just very surprised how this game turned out, and thought I would post it, FWIW.

Thanks for your observations.
