Houdini 3 : +40 after 20.000 games

Post by Tennison »

Hash = 32MB
Time / Move = 10ms (+/- 1.70" per game)
Book = openings.epd
Threads = 1

1. Houdini 2.0c x64 8750.5/20000 (d=8.9 nps=1493097)
2. Houdini 3.0 x64 11249.5/20000 (d=9.2 nps=1564498)

Houdini 3.0 scores 56% and have a gain equal to 40 elo (+/- 4).

This time control is very short but I'll try later with longer time controls.

Again,my prediction of +40 Elo at best is becoming reality.....

Not exactly
It is very fast time control and it is only against houdini2c.

In the ipon rating list we probably have more than 40 elo.

I am still not sure about it but probably my prediction of at least 41 elo in the ipon is going to be correct.

I see the following information in the IPON about houdini3

1438.5 - 323.5 81.64% Perf=3083

Note that houdini2c's rating in the IPON is 3037 so it means 46 elo improvement.

It can be changed with more games but I think that it is going to be more than 40 elo.

That's just tunning. I do not think Houdart has the talent to create something for himself. :twisted:

Big congratulations to Mr. Houdart. It's clear that the tremendous strength improvement didn't happen by tuning values, but by adding new chess knowledge, search improvements, etc.

I am not a programmer.
The quote I provided is from a well respected programmer within the community. He is the author of Sloppy and the programmer of Cutechess-cli.

I am not a programmer (is it a fault?) but i think that if you need 10 million games to test an engine, i suspect you worked more on the tuning that on the search. If you add that probably H3 is not tactically stronger than H2 the suspect becomes stronger, at least this is my opinion.

Best Regards

Ok Graham, Great
But, what is your opinion? You need to be a programmer to have an opinion about a program that is for sale?

I don't have an opinion. I just enjoy testing engines.
I'm not interested in computer chess politics anymore.
