Glass personality challenge

Post by Graham Banks »

Glass 1.7 has the option for users to create their own personalities, much in the same tradition as Chessmaster.

Let's see who can come up with some really good settings. If we get a few interested, I'll run some tournaments with the best personalities.

The relevant information is found from pages 15-18 and 21-23 in the pdf manual that comes as part of the engine download:

It's a great idea! May I enter "Aggressive" personality from the distribution package?

Yes, that would be okay.
Sounds like this may be a little slow to get off the ground though.
An enthusiast who spectates in TLCV has already started his experimenting, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to start.
Hopefully a few other enthusiasts will give it a go.

Yes I have actually experimented before. Although I am doing something more by brute force method this go around ^_^. I kept Pawel up to date with my progress before but it seems I feel into some pit holes that I can hopefully get solved this time around.

Anyway this is a great challenge and I think more engines should have personality options. In particular I like the options in Chessmaster, Stockfish, and Glass. Although the Stockfish settings are already optimized to the maximum (AFAIK). They do great work.

Was just hoping to do some of the same for the Glass guys.

Actually I have tried to repeat to some extent material tuning done by Louis Smith, hoping that re-vamped pcsq and mobility tables may warrant some changes. The only thing I found was that R=505 performs at about the same level as default R=500 (actually: marginally better, but still well within error bar) and the score decays significantly at both R=495 and R=510.

Thanks to Andres for noticing the error "info string ERROR: 'Expertise=10' is an unknown Option!", while he spent some time fiddling around with a new personality to compete in the upcoming Glass personality challenge.

This error is nothing to worry about and for your information only.

In earlier Glass releases there used to be an option called Expertise. It was taken out with the current version 1.7, but some of the personalities provided with the download package still have the line "Expertise=..." in it. These personality-files will be updated with the next update.
