Re: the next match

Hi Martin,

I think the good EGTB's are the 22GB provided by the CD Turbo EGTB DVD's. For R4, I think it was tuned with the the knowledge that some 6 piece EGTB's are there ... since it is available for the cluster and R4 is just a modified engine produced for a Rybka cluster slave. I am still not sure which are the critical EGTB's to install, but I think someone posted something on that in the Rybka forum.

Yes Rybka was winning in the last game but bad result is easily explained by the bad rook endgame knowledge. At any moment Rybka could swicth to a rook + 2 pawns vs rook endgame and since this seemed ok Rybka was making circles around this possibility. If he knew that it was draw under those circumstances he could have chosen another "winning" line. Same happened with the fortress and the exchange up some games before. For the moment most engines should learn those imbalanced fortress or drawn positions. If it's interesting from a competitive point of view is another problem but at those LTC games I think it should be doable.

Houdini easily found the way to draw yesterday but ha was forced in that direction. I don't know if engines could "learn" to swicth sides and find a way for opponent to hold and then reject that variation...But I'm digressing :)

I think you are right that R4 will go into many drawn rook endgames with a high evaluation, but in the case of the last game it was something totally different. Most likely it was a poor move due to a "stall" bug that is one of the reasons there will be a Rybka 4 update. Check my analysis here

In this position

[d]8/8/1R2k1p1/4P2p/6pP/1p1r4/1P4K1/8 b - - 0 63

Rybka 4 played the incredible instantly drawing move Kf7??? This could be that EGTB's are not working or simply Rybka is suffering from the MPV bug that also seems to dramatically slow down search in some endgames. I checked how long Rybka sat on this move and it was more than a minute on very fast hardware. Here is a clip analysis on a much slower computer using only 32bits.

Unfortunately this looks like the "stall" bug that I have noticed in some endgames with Rybka, which also seems related to MPV analysis stalling. My next try is to eliminate EGTB's as a culprit. Here is a clip analysis without EGTB's

Nice variations :). I don't have enough knowledge on chess programming or even testing so I let other people comment on that part . Yes, after Rb6 + Kxe5 was the winning move provided black doesn't go after the b2 pawn too soon as then it is a dead draw too. The black king must have the possibility to go to f4 when white captures the h5 pawn. The pawn b2 will fall soon enough :). Stockfish 1.8 easily finds the moves without TB so I hope the fixes for R4 will come soon as I think R4 still deserves 1rst place, specially in helping analyse :).
