I normally would not want to release a version for a one-line change.

Oh well... there is something under the tree for everyone...

Thanks Lance.

Thanks for the update,
I also hope you didn't take my question about whether you intended or not whatever it is that you did with thinker the wrong way, I am just very curious. :)

I noticed in the d/l there is a new file BookThinker.exe, I don't think it was in the previous version's release? And was wondering what MakeBook.exe does (sorry if it's a common knowledge or something :P)

maxchgr wrote:oh wow, so did you purposely not code it to score imbalances or did you end up with the gem that she is inadvertently? And even still, there must be something your engine does better than other engines, that do have those things, seeing how it is actually successful with its so called lack of knowledge..?

btw I'm gonna test it soon vs junior 11, hopefully the games will be just as interesting, the thinker games redefined my idea of 'interesting' in computer games.
There is no code for scoring imbalances because I could not make it work in a positive way. Of course, there are a lot of code that scores something else.

Cheers!

BookThinker has always been part of the ThinkerBoard UI. I think I made a mistake of bundling it with the engine this time. It allows Winboard engines that have no book code to play with Thinker books.

MakeBook is for making the opening book for the Thinker engine.

Tord Romstad wrote:By the way, is there any hope that there will be a Thinker version for us Linux and Macintosh users? Reading this thread makes me want it. It looks like a nice engine, and the strength seems to be just right for use as a sparring partner for my own program.

Sorry, Tord. It is not going to happen in the near future. I am already maintaining two build environments - Windows CE and Windows NT. I don't have the time right now to add another one. Plus, there are already other environments lined-up (Nintendo DS and Symbian OS).

You can always run it in WINE.

Thanks for an update Lance.

Any idea how strong this new Thinker is?

The strength should be the same, the only difference is that it will no longer play games in where it gives away its pieces (but I don't think testers were taking these odd games into account.)

From Lance:

My feeling is that they should be treated as different programs. The bug is quite severe. Even in games where 5.1C won, it could just have been due to the bug, but had a positive effect.

The only games where you can say the 5.1C and 5.1D behaved in the same way, are those when 5.1C was ran from the start of the program.

So, maybe some of the games won with awesome style were due to the bug!?
