ICT Leiden : first round , first surprise !?!

Hi,

The Baron - Rybka : 1/2 - 1/2

Zap!Chess, Hiarcs, and Deep Sjeng won their first game

With such a small number of games, anything can happen in these tournaments. The strongest engine doesn't always win

It is not a given that the Baron will always lose to Rybka. It will be able to draw some games, and this is what happened here. No disrespect to The Baron, which is an excellent program, but all it needs is for a couple of engines to get a "lucky" draw against Rybka and that could shake things up

I wonder what "Stoofvlees" is? A successor to Sjeng?

"Stoofvlees" is a rewrite of Deep Sjeng with new search and
evaluation, which is a lot weaker than Deep Sjeng momentarily,
but contains more daring techniques and often plays much more interesting games. It runs on Intel Centrino 1500Mhz.

Interesting that Rybka 2.3.2 played 69...a3, my Rybka 2.2 prefers to play Kg2 after depth 22, and it reached depth 23 very quickly at just 21 seconds on two-year-old hardware with just 5-piece tablebases:

Yes poor endgame play by Rybka. DF10 gets Kg2 almost instantly as probably quite a few other engines I suppose. I think it has more to do with the understanding of what drawn rook vs pawn engames are. This type of knowledge should be added to Rybka as Rybka matures. Ryba just didn't realize that the resulting endgame position would be drawn even with extra material. Otherwise it was a fantastic game by Rybka.
