A Little Surprise from The King

Post by JVMerlino »

So I was enjoying one of agadmator's excellent chess videos - Rodzynski v Alekhine, 1913.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJU1whqM8yM

Here's the game:
[pgn]1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bc4 Nc6 4. c3 Bg4 5. Qb3 Qd7 6. Ng5 Nh6 7. Bxf7 Nxf7 8. Nxf7 Qxf7 9. Qxb7 Kd7 10. Qxa8 Qc4 11. f3 Bxf3 12. gxf3 Nd4 13. d3 Qxd3 14. cxd4 Be7 15. Qxh8 Bh4#[/pgn]

I was playing around with some possible escapes for White's King (using Chessmater 9000 as I always like to feel the nostalgia) and came up with this position if White played 15.Kf2:
[d]Q6r/p1pkb1pp/3p4/4p3/3PP3/3q1P2/PP3K1P/RNB4R b - - 0 15

And The King announced Mate in 15 in less than one second:

Code: Select all

So I tried it on SF 12 (only one core, to be fair), just to make sure that it wasn't something that any engine could find, although The King was always a terrific matefinder in its day:

Where have you been John? Four posts since last September. Don't forget Myrddin :)

Hi Guenther!

Well, computer chess has almost entirely grown out of my ability to meaningfully contribute to any discussion about current topics. So there's really very rarely a need for me to post.

As for Myrddin, I have worked on it a little bit over the six years, trying to make improvements on its obvious weaknesses. Its King Safety code is terribly naive, it does a fair number of things inefficiently, and it doesn't even have tapered eval! But everything I've tried has either produced no improvement or made it noticeably worse! So, as we all discover eventually, it is easy to get discouraged. I'm almost to the point of just putting it all up on github and letting the community point out all of the horrible code that I'm not able to spot. :oops:

There may be a new Myrddin someday, but even then I doubt there will be any shocking improvement. Way back when I started working on it, I had some vague goal of just trying to reach 2500 ELO. It's still more than 100 away from that on CCRL. So, yeah, I don't find myself particularly motivated. :)

Hi Jon,
Chessmaster has always been my favourite program to play against, I love the personalities and the huge number of available parameters one can change. I still fondly remember Chessmaster 6000, my favourite program at that time (Windows 98) on my first PC. Also I loved Chessmaster 9000, which I still think was maybe the best of the whole series. It's sad that the series ended, I appreciate that the King engine can't compete strengthwise with the latest engines today, but Chessmaster's learning and training facilities and chess board/piece options etc made it an excellent software package.

I tried SF 12 with NNUE disabled and is fast reporting mating evals. However, it reports a checkmate in 13 instead of a checkmate in 15:

Code: Select all

I stopped the search at depth 73 with 228 TB hits on the full set of 3, 4 and 5-man Syzygy EGTB.

My run deviates with 19.- Kh5 instead of 19.- Kg5 given by both The King and your SF run. I cleared hash and start a new analysis with this position:

[d]Q6r/p1pk2pp/3p4/4p3/3PP2K/8/PP3q1P/RNB4R w - - 1 19

SF 12 without NNUE insists on the same mainline of the checkmate in 13 (now a checkmate in 9 after the first moves are played). Then the question is: what is better, 19.- Kh5 or 19.- Kg5? Well, I let Chest 5.2 in normal mode to do the work after white plays each of the four legal moves: Kg4, Kg5, Kh3 and Kh5:

Code: Select all

19.- Kg4 ==> #3 (#7 in the original position).
19.- Kg5 ==> #9 (#13 in the original position).
19.- Kh3 ==> #8 (#12 in the original position).
19.- Kh5 ==> #9 (#13 in the original position).

Chest found some checkmates in 9 from the point that my SF run deviated from your original post. I would say that the position from your post is likely a checkmate in 13.

Other than that, it is always a pleasure to see the old rockers shining from time to time. I had Chessmaster 9000 and enjoyed it a lot!

Yes, I think you are correct. I let The King run for nearly 10 minutes, and it eventually got to Mate in 13, but wasn't able to improve on it.
