An idea for new Handicap games for dragon

Aside from details, the idea of having strong players compete to see who can win at the smallest handicap is appealing. The biggest problem is that there is just an enormous gap between two pawn handicap and knight handicap.

You can interpolate between 2P and N handicap by adjusting time (time control, with or without time handicap on top of that).

Some might say that's an "ugly" solution, though.

I think it may be. In the past (on old networks), at the time this was discussed on this forum, Lc0 with 0 or 1 node would display behavior that wasn't quite "giveaway chess" but makes this behavior not so surprising (and cast doubt on the wild claims about the strength of NN engines at 0/1 node).

If the human player play black pieces, the odds is approximately equivalent minor piece odds. Another important thing to point out here is that Dragon/Komodo know that multiple queens tends to be redundant on a crowded board. Dragon/Komodo may want to avoid queen exchanges to exploit this redundancy as long as possible.

As long the extra illegal material is within reasonable limits i think Dragon may play without any issues Larry.

I do not like these illegal positions
humans do not play chess in similiar conditions.

I think that bigger handicap can be also interesting so you can play games against weaker humans.
I am sure that it is possible to win most humans who play in chess.com without a queen even at rapid time control(most are with rating below 1000 in rapid) and I think that it may be interesting to see what is the rating that computers can get in chess.com if they start every game without queen d1
at different time controls and if it is possible to improve their playing strength in these conditions.

I think that Dragon or any computer will do worse giving queen odds than Nakamura would (or even a random GM perhaps). Whether it's regular Dragon or MCTS, they just play silly moves, everything looks resignable to them. Up to rook odds Dragon (either version) plays reasonably well, but much beyond that it gets silly.

I think that the next step below knight odds should be f7 + g7, where after 1.e4 Black loses castling rights (after 1..d6 2.Qh5+ Kd7) on top of his two pawn deficit.
I ran a couple tests which indicate that the rating for Lc0 (j92-330) at 0.1 nps would be about 2035 on the CCRL 40/15 rating list, I guess it was typically looking at two or three moves per node. About a hundred elo higher at 0.2 nps, which was the minimum needed to come out ahead at knight odds vs. Dragon (on 7 fast cores) at15' +10" (roughly the CCRL tc). Of course the human equivalent rating at this tc is much higher, at least 200 higher, maybe more. Based on this as well as actual human games, it looks like the break-even human rating for knight odds at this tc is probably in the 2300s FIDE now.

Well this was a game versus Komodo version 13.3, but I believe Komodo Dragon plays 160 rating points stronger versus human, anyway it played without the Queen and I took both of my Bishops this is what happened, unfortunately when Komodo saw itself losing it took way way too much time to think and it lost on time, but the position was lost anyway once I penetrated my Queen down in its throat by move 57..... Qf1 =====>

If the human player play black pieces, the odds is approximately equivalent minor piece odds. Another important thing to point out here is that Dragon/Komodo know that multiple queens tends to be redundant on a crowded board. Dragon/Komodo may want to avoid queen exchanges to exploit this redundancy as long as possible.

As long the extra illegal material is within reasonable limits i think Dragon may play without any issues Larry.

I think that bigger handicap can be also interesting so you can play games against weaker humans.
I am sure that it is possible to win most humans who play in chess.com without a queen even at rapid time control(most are with rating below 1000 in rapid) and I think that it may be interesting to see what is the rating that computers can get in chess.com if they start every game without queen d1
at different time controls and if it is possible to improve their playing strength in these conditions.

I think that Dragon or any computer will do worse giving queen odds than Nakamura would (or even a random GM perhaps). Whether it's regular Dragon or MCTS, they just play silly moves, everything looks resignable to them. Up to rook odds Dragon (either version) plays reasonably well, but much beyond that it gets silly.

Well this was a game versus Komodo version 13.3, but I believe Komodo Dragon plays 160 rating points stronger versus human, anyway it played without the Queen and I took both of my Bishops this is what happened, unfortunately when Komodo saw itself losing it took way way too much time to think and it lost on time, but the position was lost anyway once I penetrated my Queen down in its throat by move 57..... If the human player play black pieces, the odds is approximately equivalent minor piece odds. Another important thing to point out here is that Dragon/Komodo know that multiple queens tends to be redundant on a crowded board. Dragon/Komodo may want to avoid queen exchanges to exploit this redundancy as long as possible.

As long the extra illegal material is within reasonable limits i think Dragon may play without any issues Larry.

I think that Dragon or any computer will do worse giving queen odds than Nakamura would (or even a random GM perhaps). Whether it's regular Dragon or MCTS, they just play silly moves, everything looks resignable to them. Up to rook odds Dragon (either version) plays reasonably well, but much beyond that it gets silly.

Well this was a game versus Komodo version 13.3, but I believe Komodo Dragon plays 160 rating points stronger versus human, anyway it played without the Queen and I took both of my Bishops this is what happened, unfortunately when Komodo saw itself losing it took way way too much time to think and it lost on time, but the position was lost anyway once I penetrated my Queen down in its throat by move 57..... Something is wrong here. Komodo gave this same handicap to GM Joel Benjamin successfully years ago, and I don't think you are in his class. I see that your engine searched 24 plies on the first two moves. On my laptop, same time control (7 threads), it searched 30 plies on first move and 33 plies on second! Even set to use just one thread, it searched 29 plies on first move, and again 29 on second. You are clearly doing something very wrong or have a very defective computer, I just can't guess what's wrong.

If the human player play black pieces, the odds is approximately equivalent minor piece odds. Another important thing to point out here is that Dragon/Komodo know that multiple queens tends to be redundant on a crowded board. Dragon/Komodo may want to avoid queen exchanges to exploit this redundancy as long as possible.

As long the extra illegal material is within reasonable limits i think Dragon may play without any issues Larry.

I think that Dragon or any computer will do worse giving queen odds than Nakamura would (or even a random GM perhaps). Whether it's regular Dragon or MCTS, they just play silly moves, everything looks resignable to them. Up to rook odds Dragon (either version) plays reasonably well, but much beyond that it gets silly.

Well this was a game versus Komodo version 13.3, but I believe Komodo Dragon plays 160 rating points stronger versus human, anyway it played without the Queen and I took both of my Bishops this is what happened, unfortunately when Komodo saw itself losing it took way way too much time to think and it lost on time, but the position was lost anyway once I penetrated my Queen down in its throat by move 57..... Something is wrong here. Komodo gave this same handicap to GM Joel Benjamin successfully years ago, and I don't think you are in his class. I see that your engine searched 24 plies on the first two moves. On my laptop, same time control (7 threads), it searched 30 plies on first move and 33 plies on second! Even set to use just one thread, it searched 29 plies on first move, and again 29 on second. You are clearly doing something very wrong or have a very defective computer, I just can't guess what's wrong.

If the human player play black pieces, the odds is approximately equivalent minor piece odds. Another important thing to point out here is that Dragon/Komodo know that multiple queens tends to be redundant on a crowded board. Dragon/Komodo may want to avoid queen exchanges to exploit this redundancy as long as possible.

As long the extra illegal material is within reasonable limits i think Dragon may play without any issues Larry.

I think that Dragon or any computer will do worse giving queen odds than Nakamura would (or even a random GM perhaps). Whether it's regular Dragon or MCTS, they just play silly moves, everything looks resignable to them. Up to rook odds Dragon (either version) plays reasonably well, but much beyond that it gets silly.

Well this was a game versus Komodo version 13.3, but I believe Komodo Dragon plays 160 rating points stronger versus human, anyway it played without the Queen and I took both of my Bishops this is what happened, unfortunately when Komodo saw itself losing it took way way too much time to think and it lost on time, but the position was lost anyway once I penetrated my Queen down in its throat by move 57..... Something is wrong here. Komodo gave this same handicap to GM Joel Benjamin successfully years ago, and I don't think you are in his class. I see that your engine searched 24 plies on the first two moves. On my laptop, same time control (7 threads), it searched 30 plies on first move and 33 plies on second! Even set to use just one thread, it searched 29 plies on first move, and again 29 on second. You are clearly doing something very wrong or have a very defective computer, I just can't guess what's wrong.

You are correct, let me check my settings, something is wrong here, I am NOT close to Joel Benjamin even if I have more than 6 of his Books and studying chess online with a trainer for almost 20 months, Nope, NOT even close to Joel. I found the Problem Komodo under Arena does NOT play well. I thought that GOD game me super intelligence recently. Well once I use a different GUI, I will also have to remove the b2 or c2 pawns as well

This trainer that I have online is either making me a better player, or a little bit crazy, since he makes me study lots of Tactics at least 60 Puzzles per day and 50 Tactical problems to solve per day. He does NOT want me to waste too much time watching games from GM because everybody has to progress at their own pace, and constantly going over my own games that I play versus other online Students. Most of these Books are too much for beginners to start reading them except Bobby Fischer teaches Chess, chess fundamentals by Capablanca according to my trainer it is best to start solving at least 50 Tactics and chess puzzles every day. Then once you reach at least 1700 to start learning endgames and Middlegames strategies with a good book like The Middle Game In Chess by Znosko- Borosvsky and according to him to memorize lot of opening is a waste of time and it is best to master only a few openings that start with e4 or d4 and to be familiar with the English. If the human player play black pieces, the odds is approximately equivalent minor piece odds. Another important thing to point out here is that Dragon/Komodo know that multiple queens tends to be redundant on a crowded board. Dragon/Komodo may want to avoid queen exchanges to exploit this redundancy as long as possible.

As long the extra illegal material is within reasonable limits i think Dragon may play without any issues Larry.

I think that Dragon or any computer will do worse giving queen odds than Nakamura would (or even a random GM perhaps). Whether it's regular Dragon or MCTS, they just play silly moves, everything looks resignable to them. Up to rook odds Dragon (either version) plays reasonably well, but much beyond that it gets silly.

Well this was a game versus Komodo version 13.3, but I believe Komodo Dragon plays 160 rating points stronger versus human, anyway it played without the Queen and I took both of my Bishops this is what happened, unfortunately when Komodo saw itself losing it took way way too much time to think and it lost on time, but the position was lost anyway once I penetrated my Queen down in its throat by move 57..... Something is wrong here. Komodo gave this same handicap to GM Joel Benjamin successfully years ago, and I don't think you are in his class. I see that your engine searched 24 plies on the first two moves. On my laptop, same time control (7 threads), it searched 30 plies on first move and 33 plies on second! Even set to use just one thread, it searched 29 plies on first move, and again 29 on second. You are clearly doing something very wrong or have a very defective computer, I just can't guess what's wrong.

You are correct, let me check my settings, something is wrong here, I am NOT close to Joel Benjamin even if I have more than 6 of his Books and studying chess online with a trainer for almost 20 months, Nope, NOT even close to Joel. I found the Problem Komodo under Arena does NOT play well. I thought that GOD game me super intelligence recently. Well once I use a different GUI, I will also have to remove the b2 or c2 pawns as well

This trainer that I have online is either making me a better player, or a little bit crazy, since he makes me study lots of Tactics at least 60 Puzzles per day and 50 Tactical problems to solve per day. He does NOT want me to waste too much time watching games from GM because everybody has to progress at their own pace, and constantly going over my own games that I play versus other online Students. Most of these Books are too much for beginners to start reading them except Bobby Fischer teaches Chess, chess fundamentals by Capablanca according to my trainer it is best to start solving at least 50 Tactics and chess puzzles every day. Then once you reach at least 1700 to start learning endgames and Middlegames strategies with a good book like The Middle Game In Chess by Znosko- Borosvsky and according to him to memorize lot of opening is a waste of time and it is best to master only a few openings that start with e4 or d4 and to be familiar with the English. If the human player play black pieces, the odds is approximately equivalent minor piece odds. Another important thing to point out here is that Dragon/Komodo know that multiple queens tends to be redundant on a crowded board. Dragon/Komodo may want to avoid queen exchanges to exploit this redundancy as long as possible.

As long the extra illegal material is within reasonable limits i think Dragon may play without any issues Larry.

I think that bigger handicap can be also interesting so you can play games against weaker humans.

I think that Dragon or any computer will do worse giving queen odds than Nakamura would (or even a random GM perhaps). Whether it's regular Dragon or MCTS, they just play silly moves, everything looks resignable to them. Up to rook odds Dragon (either version) plays reasonably well, but much beyond that it gets silly.

Well this was a game versus Komodo version 13.3, but I believe Komodo Dragon plays 160 rating points stronger versus human, anyway it played without the Queen and I took both of my Bishops this is what happened, unfortunately when Komodo saw itself losing it took way way too much time to think and it lost on time, but the position was lost anyway once I penetrated my Queen down in its throat by move 57..... Something is wrong here. Komodo gave this same handicap to GM Joel Benjamin successfully years ago, and I don't think you are in his class. I see that your engine searched 24 plies on the first two moves. On my laptop, same time control (7 threads), it searched 30 plies on first move and 33 plies on second! Even set to use just one thread, it searched 29 plies on first move, and again 29 on second. You are clearly doing something very wrong or have a very defective computer, I just can't guess what's wrong.

You are correct, let me check my settings, something is wrong here, I am NOT close to Joel Benjamin even if I have more than 6 of his Books and studying chess online with a trainer for almost 20 months, Nope, NOT even close to Joel. I found the Problem Komodo under Arena does NOT play well. I thought that GOD game me super intelligence recently. Well once I use a different GUI, I will also have to remove the b2 or c2 pawns as well

This trainer that I have online is either making me a better player, or a little bit crazy, since he makes me study lots of Tactics at least 60 Puzzles per day and 50 Tactical problems to solve per day. He does NOT want me to waste too much time watching games from GM because everybody has to progress at their own pace, and constantly going over my own games that I play versus other online Students. Oh I almost forgot these are the old books of Joel Benjamin that I have studies

Most of these Books are too much for beginners to start reading them except Bobby Fischer teaches Chess, chess fundamentals by Capablanca according to my trainer it is best to start solving at least 50 Tactics and chess puzzles every day. Then once you reach at least 1700 to start learning endgames and Middlegames strategies with a good book like The Middle Game In Chess by Znosko- Borosvsky and according to him to memorize lot of opening is a waste of time and it is best to master only a few openings that start with e4 or d4 and to be familiar with the English. I Hope that my Money is being well spend.

I decided to use the shredder 8 GUI and here is a new game with the f8 Bishop and c7 pawn Odds. I do NOT think Komodo resigned but the shredder 8 GUI resigned for Komodo. I am sure that the latest Komodo Dragon NNUE would at least draw with me

I'm guessing from the early queen trade that you didn't set Contempt to some appropriate value (maybe 200 for this handicap). But bishop plus pawn plus move is about equal to (White) rook odds, which is probably about fair for your level, so perhaps you might win anyway. I don't know if Dragon can play much better when down a rook or the equivalent, it's clearly stronger than normal Komodo at more modest handicaps.
