Chess opening database with names

Post by Peperoni »

Hello,

Do you guys know if there is a list of openings with names that I could use?
A spreadsheet or something with FENs and names maybe?

Hi Peperoni,

ECO codes are important!

Have a look here:
https://www.365chess.com/eco.php

Try it out:
On the right site you can search for an ECO code:

For an example: B01
And you will get this one: https://www.365chess.com/eco/B01
Very, very nice!

So you can edit your own overview?!
Save line for line in PGN format if you like.

In my opinion really the best available work.

Best

If you have Scid or Scid vs. PC installed you could use the scid.eco file.

Here is it from a github mirror for sourceforge Scid vs. PC.
It could be overkill for your purpose though (lots of sub variations of sub ECO lines)

It still has a copyright attached by Shane Hudson, for the sub variations I think.

Hi Guenther,

different of such files are available.
The Scid file is great.

Another file is on the website by David Barnes (the good known important pgn-extract tool) available. But without names of openings, a very complete work I think.

David J. Barnes:
https://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/people/staff/djb/pgn-extract/

Best work I know comes from:

Sahovski:
https://sahovski.com/Small-Encyclopedia ... -p92256783
Small Encyclopedia of chess openings, ISBN: 978-86-7297-060-9 ...
For most of us I think is the Small Encyclopaedia good enough!?

The CD to the book is very interesting here!!

Best collection I know of most important opening lines inside!
Can be good used for chess engines opening books!

Arena GUI:
Here Christoper Conkie is working a long time on a great overview.
Not sure available today on Arena site.

For a little overview I used often:

Sergio Samarian:
"Internationales Schlüsselbuch der Schach-Eröffnungen (International Opening Keys)"
Old ISBN: 3-88805-299-8

An old "MUST HAVE" chess book!
Today often available in eBay or antiquarian book shops.
A very small overview, only ECO codes, name of line and the moves.

I added the lines from the Samarian book in a Shredder.bkt with priorities (opening book format for Shredder GUI).
If I forgot a line I like to use the overview by Sergio.

6 small errors I found in the Samarian book only!

Generally, I like it much more to looking in literature.
The learn effect is higher as to use computer material only!
Old-modern view but I like it so much!

Best
Frank

Günther, if you like I can send you the Samarian book (I have two or three I think).
A little gift for you for all the work you do on your RWBC web site from my side.

Hello Richard:

I have found two lists at GitHub:

https://github.com/jdart1/arasan-chess/ ... r/book/eco (1700+ lines of text).
https://github.com/seberg/icsbot/blob/m ... sc/eco.txt (2700+ lines of text).

I have got other list with 10400+ lines of text which I did not remember if it came with Arena 2.0.1 package or whatever. I found previews of this file on Internet called ecocodes9.txt, but since I can not point to a full view or download, it is better that I upload it for you and for everybody that might be interested:

ecocodes9.txt (1.03 MB)

The link will die within 14 days of the upload.

Edit: I confirm that there are ecocodes7.txt and ecocodes9.txt files in Arena 2.0.1 folder, both of them with the same number of lines of text. ecocodes7 size is 1.16 MB and ecocodes9 size is 1.03 MB, which is what I have uploaded from other folder of my PC and renaming the TXT according to my previous Internet searches and results.

Regards from Spain.

Ajedrecista.

But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Note that many such collections are inaccurate. I see games posted that have ECO classifications not even close to right.

But even with the best kind of database, the classification system has some ambiguities. For example, the Semi-Tarrasch (D41/D42) has a lot of lines that overlap the Caro-Kann (B14).

Yep, Scandinavian gambit B01, Caro Kann B13, B14, Symmetrical English A35, and Queens Gambit D26, D40 may lead to the same position after 7 moves

Code: Select all

1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.c4 c6 4.d4 cxd5 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Nf3 e6 7.cxd5 Nxd5
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4 e6 5.Nf3 Nf6 6.cxd5 Nxd5 7.Nc3 Nc6
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 c5 5.cxd5 Nxd5 6.e3 cxd4 7.exd4 Nc6
1.c4 c5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.e3 e6 5.d4 cxd4 6.exd4 d5 7.cxd5 Nxd5
Even more tricky to classify are color swapped transpositions.

Hi Jon,

here are the TOP-6 ...

3 moves after ECO code formed:

r1bq1rk1/1p2bppp/p1nppn2/8/3NPP2/2N1B3/PPP1B1PP/R2Q1RK1 w - - c0 124;
r1bq1rk1/ppp2pbp/2np1np1/4p3/2P5/2NP1NP1/PP2PPBP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - c0 111;
r1bq1rk1/pp3pbp/2n1pnp1/3pN3/3P4/2N3P1/PP2PPBP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - c0 108;
r2qkb1r/pp1b1ppp/2n1pn2/2p5/Q1pP4/5NP1/PP2PPBP/RNB2RK1 w kq - c0 91;
rnbq1rk1/1p2ppbp/p1p2np1/3p4/2PP4/2N1PN2/PP2BPPP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - c0 91;
rnbq1rk1/2p1bppp/p3pn2/1p6/2QP4/5NP1/PP2PPBP/RNB2RK1 w - - c0 90;

124 move transpositions for the first place.
Different lines switched 7 times the ECO code number!

Again, only 3 moves after ECO code formed.
Directly after ECO code formed we have positions switched 3 times (after all I remember 5 times) the ECO code number from move 1 - end of line.

Another example:
21 ECO codes Chessbase database give out with errors.
Same for other GUIs ... lines switched after move transposition and GUI changed not to the right ECO code.

ecocodes9.txt is the file from Arena GUI I wrote before (work by Christopher Conkie).

Best
Frank
