If they are very keen on a dragon name, why not Wyvern or Smaug. I don't think either of those are used yet.

Smaug definitely has been used for a chess engine's name.

To avoid all confusion, let's call it Tatsu.

Tatsu is japaneese for dragon, a mythical animal from Japan.

Only in English and Romance languages do they call the animal a Komodo dragon. In most other languages, it is known as the Komodo monitor lizard, which is more accurate as the Komodo dragon is a type of monitor lizard, rather than a dragon.

In Dutch it's the komodovaraan (varaan indeeds seems to be monitor lizard in English). My first exposure to the komodovaraan:

Chess.com CEO thinks it's important to have the Dragon name first, so that people will call it that, so for rating lists and such we suggest listing it as Dragon (Komodo). But of course some may call it Komodo Dragon, just as people's names can be first or last name first.

I really don't care that much, but if you are aware of namesake today one imho should respect the authors Yuri Shpeer and Bruno Lucas who played official tournaments with their Dragons. The most prominent namesake victim was Gerardo Castaño Recio. All of his three engines, Zeus, Toledo and Caligula were later used by other programmers namesake.

'varanus' is the Latin world for monitor lizard so they could use that for the name.
