Brendan, I need your helps ... Topic = Rodent!

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi Brendan,

Topic is Rodent:
I need a strong personality for the current Rodent version for my next FCP Tourney.
An user asked for Open Tal 1.0.

Currently Open Tal 1.1 is available but 2x times Rodent in my next FCP Tourney isn't a good idea.

Need your opinion about a good personality for Rodent.
Maybe Tal personality?

Could you can make the engine configuration for Rodent for my next FCP Tourney?
That would be great!

Thanks for your time ...

Best
Frank

PS: FCP Tourney-2020 is still running with Rodent standard settings.
I think we can make it more interesting!

Hi Frank,

I'm very glad to see a computer chess veteran as you, going in the style direction, rather than testing 1000 versions of the Stockfish NNUE!

I have made you a folder with a bunch of Rodent III personalities sorted into two folders of attacking and positional respectively.

Best to use them with Rodent III 0.238 since it was the last version prior to style-damaging Texel tuning.

Have fun my friend, and please do share the results.

I'll tell Pawel what you're doing too, not sure if he can access the site, but we chat on Facebook regularly.

Hi Brendan,

you means I should not used the current version of Rodent IV 0.30 for the next tourney?

More interesting are the aggressive styles.
Morphy for an example (thanks, I download the material).

I can used III 0.238 with Morphy style.

Very interesting for me the Karpow positional style.
Yes indeed, what Karpow do with knights and bishops in the beginning of the games was fantastic.
Feeling with replaying games was all the time that Karpow set the bishops and knights in the beginning more often on the right positions others do.

:-)

Karpow is a big topic for myself.
I read at the moment all the books about him.
The problem is that Karpow is too lazy to write.
Others wrote about him and often I am thinking ... can not be right what I read.
Better is if Karpow do that in his own work, so we have much more interesting information about him.

But what Kasparow wrote about him seems to be right.
Speaking from his book seria about all the World Champions.
Sure, that Karpow not like much of them Kasparow wrote here.
Years later Kasparow give him often a red card with his words.

After all, I like Karpow more as Kasparow.
Kasparow was the better player, maybe with Carlsen the best we have in all the years.
I don't know why, but Karpow is for me the much more interesting person.

Hi Brendan,

Walter Raveneck (The Netherlands) was a big fan from Karpow.
Most of time for Arthur development he try to generate special knowledge for knights for the beginning phase.
Speaking with him about it in Leiden 1998 or 1999.
Such a fine men with so many nice ideas!

Walter pass away for some years, and his program Arthur (MAC) are never available for us.
I try often to get a winboard version from him but asked a MAC freak for Winboard ...

Thinking often on Walter's words if I read material about Karpow.

Is it possible to get a linux compile of Rodent? I'd like to run it on CCC.

Frank use open tal 1.0 instead of 1.1 it lost some of its aggressiveness in 1.1

Hi there,

what we have:

1. Rodent IV 0.22 ... still running in FCP Tourney-2020 (latest official release)
http://www.pkoziol.cal24.pl/rodent/rodent.htm (official site)
November 2019

2. Rodent IV 0.30 ... available on RBC page
https://rwbc-chess.de/download.htm
September 2020

3. Open Tal 1.0 and Open Tal 1.1
http://www.pkoziol.cal24.pl/opental/
v.1.0 from Dezember 2017
v.1.1 from Januar 2018

4. Rodent III 0.238 with different settings posted by Brendan
August 2019 (compiles I found)

In my backup:
vIII 0.234 from December 2017
vIII 0.273 from September 2018
vIII 0.278 from November 2018
viII 0.281 from Mai 2019

So the version Brendan gave information (III 0.238) should be before August 2019. The compiles I found are from August 2019.

That's the main problem with Rodent.
Confusion in my brain about all this.

After all ...
I think the version Brendan mentioned (III 0.238) is maybe the same later available as Open Tal 1.0.
And why should version 1.0 more interesting as version 1.1?

Sorry, I like Rodent to but I am not a Rodent expert.

The next question is ...
Is Open Tal 1.0 on the same level as the last release version IV 0.22 two years later are available.
Rodent IV 0.22 is on the last place in the still running FCP Tourney 2020 with standard settings.
It make no sense to use a weaker version of Rodent?!

Best
Frank

What I can do is:
A test tourney can be start December 2020 with 2 Rodent versions.
Maybe Open Tal 1.0 and the version Brendan mentioned III 0.238 with Morphy Setting for an example.
The best one can play in FCP Tourney-2020, but what is with the current version IV 0.30?

OpenTal 1.1 introduced some changes to search (and in other places, but not sure) that somehow reduced the engine's aggressiveness. It probably made it see more refutations to its attacking moves.

Keep in mind that these Rodent personalities will usually reduce strength, but enhance style.

Hi Carldaman,

OK, so I will used for the test-tourney start of December 2020 ...

The 8 new engines I added + Open Tal 1.0 + Rodent IV 0.30 and of course Wasp 4.00!
Open Tal 1.0 and the III 0.238 Brendan mentioned is around the same I think.
The question is only ... which personality for IV 0.30 (latest version).

:-)

11 engines can play 50 rounds with 20 minutes for a game + 5 seconds = 500 games per engines.

= 2.750 games for the small tournament ... need around 10 days.

So I can looking ...

1. New engines works fine or not.
2. Which is the more interesting Rodent version.

Sure is ...
I like more the style as 50 Elo stronger!
Rodent with the more nice style will particiapate on FCP Tourney-2021.

And Frank will be happy and maybe the others.

Best
Frank
