AB engines have no chance here in a regular game...
This is a nice example of how important the new NN programs are for the development of the opening theory.

.
I agree with your second sentence. The first one seems rather strong, since there's very little evidence that e4 is decisively better than alternatives---if it's better at all.
OK, here's more evidence in favor of e4. :D

But the task here is quite different, in fact it is:

Well, dear Walter, than have a look at this one game between the komodo- setting you spumed (prefering 8.e4 at once too, King Saftey 150 instead of 75, Dynamism 200 instead of 122, Contempt 25, Syzygys swichted off) and SF.

I didn't let komodo play 8.e4, which it would have done at this TC, but started from 8.Bg5, one of the moves, that's being played here most oftenly.
SF 240620 I don*'t have, I took Brainfish 300620, just 6 days older, not using book, so a normal SF with a good compile as for my CPU, using 6men Syzygys, contempt 0.
Of 24 threads of the 12x3GHz CPU each engine used 12, ponder on, 2G hash each:

As for a second argument, that the position after 7 moves is already rather good for White, I'd have this one freechess game from 2017:

8.e4 ist best, but with 8.Bg5 Black has to struggle already too. It's to be hold probably with best defense, but it's unbalanced to say the least.

Eval+time- comments are stored in .pgn too togehter with the moves.

As for a second argument, that the position after 7 moves is already rather good for White, I'd have this one freechess game from 2017:

Thx for dealing with the position.

Unfortunately, your scenario is completely different from the one we're discussing here.

First of all, here is my original match game with the following basic conditions:
Ryzen7-16Threads / TC 5+2 / Pondering off / Engines with default setting / 5-men-Szyzygy / F17

I don't think so. Without 8.e4 the position of equally strong engines is almost impossible to win.

I once played some of the best programs with White against Stockfish under equal conditions. Look at the following games/results:

I can really understand that the professional grandmasters have been doing their opening studies with LeelaChess for a long time.
Stockfish & Friends are not that important in this field anymore...

Because you started discussing the new scenario, "find an engine to win against SF without e4", didn't you?

I don't think so. Without 8.e4 the position of equally strong engines is almost impossible to win.

I once played some of the best programs with White against Stockfish under equal conditions. Look at the following games/results:
Thanks for showing those games, Walter, but maybe you should have started some more of them from 8.Bg5 as a thematic tournament of it's own, as you proposed already too, not only 2 times accidentially chosen by two engines. And maybe you should have let LC0 play the white side without e4 now and then too? Why only some other AB-engines against SF, if you want to prove position after e.g. 8.Bg5 is to be won or not against SF?
:)
Let's not argue about things we agree anyhow as for the only important question, which one 8th move for White is best, that's e4 for a rather distinct discrimination.

Yet 8.Bg5 isn't a ?, it's a ?! at the utmost.

Showing a setting of komodo, which according to your opinion shouldn't be allowed for positional testing normally, because it's weaker in gameplaying, showing such a setting winning against SF at 12 threads with 45'+5" proves nothing more and nothing less but that: the setting is well to be used in positions of advantage, and the position after 8.Bg5 is to be won, even in freechess and even without provable big blunders from Black's side. Of course it depends on hardware- time and engines, but just give your LC0- installation a try with 8.Bg5 against SF, don't you think, there might be the one and the other one win for LC0 to be seen too?

I'd even say, the "normal" answer in most engine- books to 8.Bg5, 8...h6(?) is already very dangerous for Black, have a closer look at it. Engines at short TC play that cont. in 1 out of 3 cases on their own, as I saw till now, if they have certain engine- books, it's even a book- trap in some of them.
8...Qb6 or latest 9...Qb6 instead of next book- trap 9...0-0(?) to be avoided have to be found.

If you have 8.Bg5(?!) h6(?)9.Bh4 0-0(?) on the board, you don't need to start a new one thematic tournament from there onward, do you?

That's why you can let play an aggressive komodo- setting even against LC0 from positions like these. Maybe even especially against LC0, it's great in attacking, but a class weaker in positions of objective disadvantage, we see that in TCEC all the times with Jeroen Noomen's fine opening lines.
If you'd start an engine- tournament from postions of disadvantage only (not with colour- changing, simply only the engines of interest playing the disadvantaged sides again and again and only counting for performance), I'd lay my bets rather on komodo as a really good defender of disadvantaged positions, than on LC0.
Of course very much depending on hardware- TC.

The professional grandmasters I know (have to admit, they are most of them GMs in corr., so only "semi- professional" :)) take LC0 and SF and komodo and since some days SF NNUE, but I don't know a single one, doing opening studies with LC0 only.

If an over the board- GM says, he's using LC0 and AlphaZero for his opening studies, there are several reasons to say so, I guess. Maybe some want their opponents to think, they'd play only LC0- lines from now on.
:)
Problem with opening studies is anyhow mainly this one from a certain Elo- range upwards: the positions like the one you give here, are to be made better and better for the side in advantage rather easily, but that's because they are more or less won already anyhow without blunders of your own side, but those positions you won't get on the board against well prepared high- class opponents at all, will you? For sure not in corr.- tournaments of some grade.
Corr. GMs take several engines for their opening studies, SF for sure as one of the most widely used ones still, because whatever novelty you think you've found with LC0 or any other engine (or on your own, how about that? :)), you'll have to check with much Forward- Backward of opening databases, games of your opponent to prepare against and other material.

To check such big data as a human player, LC0 is good to bring up "ideas", but for Forward- Backward- analysis it's, if you ask me for my personal pov., still not a tool of analysis compared to a good AB-engine, but rather a toy.
Hash- learning is something I always missed mostly with LC0, that's a domain of SF and other AB- engines yet still, even more with "learning" AB-engines, nowadays with SF NNUE for sure already too.
Just my two cents.

Or let play from 8.Bg5 against LC0 for Black?
Took the aggressive komodo- setting again, that won the same position against SF dev with 12 threads each.
King Safety 150 instead of 75, Dynamism 200 instead of 122, Contempt 25, no tbs, this time using all 24 threads of the 12x3GHz CPU 2G Hash again, forgot to raise to 4, didn't matter obviously.
To make ponder on possible yet again, I borrowed a LC0- installation via cloud with RTX2080ti+2x2080RTX and 24x320-t60-6400 as net, engine- version 26.0, 6men Syzygys, 6 CPUs.
So the "Leela- ratio" was clearly on Leela's side, wasn't it ?
Guess, who won this time? And I'd say even more clearly and fast as against SF:

I ran an "automatic analysis" overnight with Arena.
30 minutes par position. CPU : 6 cores @4GHz
Move to find : e4. Stockfish_2020_07_03 finds it 6 times on 17.
The 11 remaining times, it prefers Bg5 after 30 minutes.

But the beauty of Lc0 is that it "knows" without even searching that e4 is best. Training has shown it that e4 is the first move to consider.

Re: The Engine Crackers (4)

Post by Zenmastur »

It amazes me that after several years of NN engine play we still have people posting example blitz games and intimating that the game posted is some how “proof” of the superiority of one engine, or engine type, over another or making other similarly ludicrous claims.

It's proof of NOTHING!

It's only weak evidence that the two engines are within 1200 ELO of each other at the given time control. Drawing conclusions stronger than that seems ridiculous. As I'm sure you are all aware, in order to get the error bars small enough that the difference between two closely matched engines can take more than 100,000 games. So, one is left wondering why we continue to see posts like this.

This game and ones like it are one of the reasons I dislike forced move opening sequences. They tell you almost nothing about the strength or weaknesses of the engine in the opening. They are nothing more than a debilitating crutch and should be banned from all serious competitions. Drawing conclusions about the playing strength of the engine in the opening from such games is a fools errand, especially when only a single example at blitz time controls is given.

In this example the losing move is clearly not contained in the original post. I wonder if this was done on purpose. In this position:

[d]rnbqk2r/pp1p1ppp/3b1n2/2pP4/8/2N2N2/PP2PPPP/R1BQKB1R b KQkq - 2 6

assuming that it actually occurred in the game, 6. … Bc7? is a blunder at best. At worst black is almost assuredly lost after this move. Both 6. … O-O and 6. … Qe7 are much better moves. This begs the question, which moves were book moves and which moves were engine generated moves?

This may be an interesting position, but by itself it means absolutely nothing. Even if it were a very long time control game very little of interest can be concluded from it.

I would also point out that because A/B and NN engines calculations are dissimilar in many respects it seems perfectly natural that some moves that one engine type can find easily will be overlooked by the other and vice versa. This ISN'T an indication of superiority of one type over the other. It's simply a consequence of the different methods used to determine a move. Of course, all the NN fanboys will gladly overlook this, and the many games were NN engines have been crushed by an A/B engine because they blundered for no apparent reason. They also seem to have a very high propensity to claim a move is a novelty when, in fact, it's been played before.

Walter's "claim" was simply, that 8.e4 is best move and that LC0 found it in a blitz game.
Period.
How I understood, he didn't say or want to show any elo- wise superiority of LC0 by the games given, which is well known anyhow as for all rating lists, even if the distance of measurable leadership is not so big and depends much in used hardware, TC, engine- pool and openings used for testing, but that all is of no interest as for the series "Engine Crackers" in Glarean, which is a very fine collection of positions of interest.

He didn't say the moves leading to the position before 8th one were of any special interest as for opening theory and didn't say at all any of them was best move or good move, the opening was just an example of reaching a position, where LC0 shines with its positional strength in finding the best move within blitz TC.

8.e4! is as well as a novelty, I found it at chessbase online just in 2 games of not very high Elo- range, in none of them the point of 8.e4!, 9.Qc2! was played, so one ended up drawn and the other one even with 0-1, those two games are of no special interest neither, but that LC0 found 8.e4! and 9.Qc2! (which I pointed out in my first answer- posting to be the second one key move ) in a blitz game, is really amazing, isn't it?

Everything I came up with then, was just to show the position was of clear advantage for White before 8.e4 already, yet I repeated several times, to be sure too, that e4 was the single best move in that position to make the advantage a clearly winning one by force.

Als Louis showed well too, that LC0 is able to play such a move pracitcally out of NN with as well as no search at all, makes it so strong in opening, I'm really curious to see, if this strength can get even higher and if the weaknesses in other positions, especially in endgames, will get better and better too and how much hardware- time will be necessary, to reach those aims.

Yet as for finding good and sometimes astonishing new moves, especially in lesser played opening lines,LC0 is already a really fine resource of its own, that it didn't revolutionize whole opening theory already, as some enthusiasts claim now and then too, does'nt have to be discussed of course neither.

Showing two games at 45'+15" of course too was of no other purpose but to show, that win without e4 could happen on moderate hardware- time yet too, the freechess game especially was to show how quickly "normal" opening moves in the given position lead to clearly won position already too.
8.Bg5(?!) is second best after 8.e4! with some distinct discrimination of the two moves, 8...h6 (?) after 8.Bg5(?!) is already dangerous, after 9.Bh4 9...0-0(?) already loses.
Yet the difference to 8.e4! is this: here Black's as well as lost already after the single one move, Black doesn't have to blunder as oftenly after that as after the next best not so strong move and it doesn't have as much defense any more even with best counter- moves.

That's all from my side, hope I didn't spam the thread too much already anyhow with my personal not as interesting points of view, not as interesting as the position and the solution- move itself is.

You didn't quite understand what my post was about. It's not about evidence. It's about showing an example of how differently AB and NN programs sometimes treat openings. There are still hundreds of such examples.

Besides that: Try Dr. Google and read what famous grandmasters write about the opening qualities of Leela Chess...

You didn't get that point either. It's about a certain opening position. What happened before is of no interest.

You have a misconception of "novelty" in chess. Whether a move has ever been played by any amateur anywhere in the world is not interesting.

In official tournament chess the position before 8.e4 has often been played. It is a fact that 8.e4 has not yet been played in professional chess by grandmasters.
