Looking for "titled vs microcomputer" tournament games 1990-2005

Post by Vinvin »

Why this period ?
Because it was the period when microcomputers chess improved from under 2300 level to world champion level and over : Kramnik versus Deep Fritz, Bonn December 2006 (2 - 4).

As pointed in a past thread, software contribute to 2/3 of the rating progress and hardware 1/3.
Roughly, in 30 years, the improvement come from : 1200 rating points from the software and 600 RP from the hardware (CPU improvement + memory speed)

CPU timeline from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I ... processors
1990 : 80486 become braodly available (33 Mhz then 50 Mhz in 1991, then 100 MHz in 1994)
1993 : Pentium started at 66 MHz, reached 100 MHz in 1994 to top at 233MMX in 1997
1997 : Pentium II from 233 MHz to 450 Mhz in 1998
1999 : Pentium III from 450 MHz to 1 Ghz in 2000
2000 : Pentium IV from 1.40 GHz to 2.8 GHz in 2002

If you know some tournaments that is not in this list yet, please post here.

I can't remember exactly but Deep Thought played many games and matches against GM, amongs them Bronstein and J.Benjamin in 1992 ( https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.p ... earcomp=ge ).

Besides: One could estimate Deep Thought rating from the games. That would be interesting. I think however that there were hardwarde/programming changes along Deep Thought chess career.

You probably talk about Deep Blue/Thought in Copenhagen in 1993 : https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=29912
But the subject is more about microcomputers. They become systems 1000 Elo over Deep Blue/Thought.

Well, I was talking specifically about Deep Thought... About the hardware/code improvements I found today what it was about:
In 1989–90, part of the Deep Thought team (Anantharaman, Campbell, Hsu) moved to the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center to continue the effort to build a world-class chess machine. In late 1990, Joe Hoane replaced Thomas Anantharaman in the group. Deep
Thought 2, aka Deep Blue prototype, was the first result of this effort. Although the primary purpose of the system was as an intermediate stepping stone to Deep Blue, Deep Thought 2 played in a number of public events from 1991 through 1995.

Although Deep Thought 2 used the same move-generator chip as Deep Thought, it had four improvements.

1. Medium-scale multiprocessing. Deep Thought 2 initially had 24 chess engines, although over time that number decreased as processors failed and were not replaced. This compares with Deep Thought, which usually used two processors (although there were four- and six-processor versions that made a few appearances).

2. Enhanced evaluation hardware. The Deep Thought 2 evaluation hardware used larger RAMs and was able to include a few additional features in the evaluation function. Nonetheless, the evaluation function was relatively simple. For example, the Deep
Thought 2 hardware was not able to recognize “bishops of opposite color”, a feature that chess players know greatly increases the chance for a drawn endgame. In order to address this (and other similar problems), the Deep Thought 2 system implemented a software “band-aid” mechanism. Unfortunately this slowed down the overall system speed and created numerous search anomalies at the hardware/software boundary. In
spite of these drawbacks, the missing evaluation function features were sufficiently important to use this evaluation patch.

3. Improved search software. The search software was rewritten entirely for Deep Thought 2, and was designed to deal better with the parallel search, as well as
implement a number of new search extension ideas. This code would later form the initial basis for the Deep Blue search software.

4. Extended book [6]. The extended book (see Section 8.2) allowed Deep Thought 2 to make reasonable opening moves even in the absence of an opening book. This feature was also inherited by Deep Blue."

But I understand you want to focus on micro-computers. 🙂

Hi there,

Games from CC-Calender, all official computer chess tournaments until I gave the winboard site to Leo Dijksman.
Later Franz Huber made some updates!

Around 10.000 games in both databases (my own and the database from Franz Huber).

I am working with a lot of programmers a long time on CC-Calender. Many missed games sent the programmer at this time. I believe more as 10 helpers in the years 1998 - 2004 around this database.

Have fun with it ...

Can be download in my download selection on Frank's Chess Page.

Best
Frank

PS: Our official site don't public such information all the time. So I added the information to official computer chess touranements a long time on my older Winboard site.

Hi there,

I have a database from 51.812 human games vs. chess computers / pc-programs.
Collected in 38 years (until 2016). But many of that games are private test-games, also from different grandmasters, club players, friends, my own and so one.

So I can't public the material because today I am not sure in ... what is public material and what not.
I used the database for scalling chess engines or chess computers today to human playing strength.

Best
