V26 is just released after S18 TCEC,
Here is someone's opinion regarding New Leela running in TCEC bonus games (copy from fishcooking post).

"AFAIK nobody asked that TCEC use mainline openings. The goal of TCEC is to organize tournament for fun and they are right when they use weird openings. Likely, S17 openings are the best that TCEC ever used, and they are far from mainline. The issue with S18 openings is that more than a quarter of them are busted openings. And TCEC team realized during the competition that this was a big issue, they thought they had made a mistake. Yet, the alt-SuFi is now terminated on @Navs stream with the same openings and the result is 50-50 that show the main issue for Leela was the speed. Now we understand what append : the CPU was not powerful enough to fetch the 4 V100 cards so that they where underused. This issue is solved with lc0 v0.26 that was released just after the SuFi. It also appeared that MLH that worked fine at low nodes is not good at high nodes with the settings used in SuFi so that the net in SuFi played worse than the net in divP that does not have MLH. The scaling test that show this are just finished since a few days.

In fact this S18 championship happened just a bit too soon and Leela was not ready : the new Leela version was not realised and the new nets not enough tested (building such big nets takes a lot of time, they are built with T60 data and the second T60 sub run is not even close to terminate, it lacks a LR drop and new parameters from T70 are just implemented).

The new bonus right now at TCEC is also very interesting : the openings are just one move. The engines play good openings, even SF, that lead to good balanced middle game where SF can not exploit its tactical ability and SF lost one game against LS and one game against Leela at the beginning of the endgame (LS used the power of the fawn pawn and Leela a brilliant double pawn sac just to have better pieces, these are positional wins). This show one more time that the strength of SF is in middle game when there is a medium number of pieces on the board and where it can, better than Tal, find brilliant scam idea in unbalanced positions, but if the NN resists to that they have a better play at endgame and they can win the game despite the huge amount of SF TB hits and better play when there is a lot of pieces on the board. In the two games lost by SF the transition between lot of pieces to few pieces was very quick and at the NN initiative so that the tactical phase of the game was quasi inexistent. The TB help a bit but the most important things is the understanding of the position. It is the reason why generally crystal is better than SF at endgame even with less cores."

If people only want watch engine-engine matches this sentence may be true.
If people want to use Leela for analysis it is a bad idea. For analysis we need to know well how behave Leela in the used openings.
I do not like such competitions in what the main aim to demonstrate only the power of Leela with "Openings book with one move" (?).
It would be more correct if Stockfish could use their own opening book as Brianfish does it.

Note
If you know well, please explain for us what is the difference among
-time manager legacy,
-time manager smooth,
-time manager alphazero, and when they are useful.
It would be good if developer of Leela would let out the source of Leela without bugs.

This would be good for all software, everywhere.
Fat Titz by Stockfish, the engine with the bodaciously big net. Remember: size matters. If you want to learn more about this engine just google for "Fat Titz".

This is incorrect. Double 1-0 doesn't mean busted opening. An opening is busted if it can't be defended, not if both engines fail to defend it.

There were two clearly busted opening lines : the Najdorf, and the Latvian. It was very clear from the SuFi games that the weak side was just trying to delay the loss, and Stockfish couldn't defend those against Komodo in the CPU SuFi. Some others, like the KP Nimzowitsch, were not too far but in those clear improvements on the play of the defending engine can be found.

S18 openings were more biased for the strong side than S17 openings, this is widely acknowledged, but saying a quarter of the lines were busted is overstating it a lot.

The Leela devs only decided to tackle the CPU-bottleneck (which was a Leela issue) after Leela was losing and slow speed was put forward as a potential cause.

S18 SuFi could have happened two weeks later, Leela would have gone down the same way because the patches fixing the CPU bottleneck would have happened two weeks later.

On the bright side for the Leela team, the loss pushed them to improve the engine.

You aren't wrong, but this bonus also shows that chess is way too symmetrical. If you want to create imbalances and complications, you need suboptimal moves that cost you strength against a similar-strength opponent. Basically, at a high enough level chess from a balanced position punishes the side that tries to make the game interesting, so we get 95% draws because engines "play it safe". The opportunity for fireworks exist, but neither engine has an incentive to go for them. If you're already much stronger, then you can afford to go for complications by betting on the opponent not being able to punish the required inaccuracies, but against an equal opponent, best play is boring play.

Forced opening lines are the only fair way to have interesting tournaments while still calling it chess. Otherwise, you need to go for chess variants. For example, big board variants with rook+knight and bishop+knight compound suffer much less from the "boring play" issue at high level, not just because of the higher branching factor, but because the two new pieces create a lot more imbalance possibilities and because with more pieces available to the players, there is much more room to sacrifice material and still have enough left to mount a mating attack.

But as almost no engine support them, as almost no human play them (non-existent support on chess websites isn't here to help), we're left with "standard chess" and its symmetry problems.

And this is the big bad problem.
I think regular chess in casual matches (5-30 minutes in length) is pretty much the perfect blend of tactics, strategy, drawishness and decisiveness.
Make a game larger and it's no longer as suited for casual fun, smaller and it risks being experienced as too simple.

This why we'll probably never see widespread adoption of other variants, chess is simply too good a combination of qualities.

Only top level GMs could push such a change.
But it seems like they're content drawing most games on top level.

My favorite has been Karmageddon, where black can't castle but wins if the game is a draw. I wonder if Komodo 14 could beat everyone in that one with its Armageddon setting...

Na jah
But it is a more serious issue if the bugs block the compilation of that program.

It would be more correct if Stockfish could use their own opening book as Brianfish does it.
Of course Stockfish will need a good opening book. These 42 games, 1 ply and bookless , showing "0" win against NN engine show significant difference in performance of Stockfish with/without books. (Leela and Allie are improved from S18 but Stoofvles and Stockfish are basically the same)

If a good book improve ( assume +100 elo) for SF, the majority of elo (e.g +75) come from penalty for NN into the positions that they mostly discard in the training, and a minority of elo (e.g +25 ) come from better opening choice by Stockfish. e.g you may have 100 million sharp sicilian based posiitons in brainfish book , but Leela will choose safe and solid berlin regardless.

And also no one would be intersting in Alpha Zero Algorithm from 3 years ago which was a basic one compared to Leela these days.
