Ethereal & Schooner seems to be "Big Monsters"

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

most interesting for myself are middlegames.
Endgames are really very boring for myself.

For the still running FCP Tourney-2020 two of 50 rounds are over.

Here a small stat only:
1:0, 0:1 until mate move number 59.

Ethereal won 11 of 80 games until mate very fast, sensational!!!

I never have this engine on my screen for such things.
Same for Schooner, very nice games Schooner produced.

Chrion, Wasp and Houdini are quiet clear, Stockfish and Komodo also.
Laser with good stats ...

Important:
Engines with a very high Elo have here of course better stats.
For such stats a proportion to Elo is very important!

If we are looking for the Elo engines have is Wasp after stats I made allways the Number 1, Chrion, Hakkapilitta and Spark are in the near.
But for the moment Ethereal will kill that at all.

After 50 round the statistic will be better but 11x won after 80 games only with mate until move number 59 is really sensational!!!

And I wrote last week in a thread to playing styles, that I can't see that Ethereal have any interesting things.
The reason for the 41.000 games tournament I started June 26th, 2020.

Sorry to the programmer of Ethereal. That is the direct opposite!
And if I replay the Ethereal games ... just wonderful aggressive attacker style in middlegames!

Again, big compliments to the nice style Etheral produced.
On the other hand ... only 2/50 rounds are over.
Not important ... 11 very nice Ethereal fast won games produced after 2 rounds only ... Ethereal, the "new" middlegame monster with 2x (!!) and 1x (?)

Best
Frank

PS: Never I saw such great stats before ... 11 of 80, can't believe that.

Re: Ethereal & Schooner seems to be "Big Monsters"

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

just clear ...
After such stats I try out different critical opening lines.
Engines good in fast won / not many fast lost games are perfect for opening analyzes.

The book by Niclas Huschenbeth (Carlsen vs. Caruana) is just great for first experiments with Ethereal.

Unbelievable the opening analyzes by Ethereal to critical lines I found in the book for my first experiments.

I have a very big database after FEOBOS opening project to critical lines.
So I have a little bit to do in the next times on my second i9 10900 ...

But for the moment ...
Wasp is my absolute Number 1 ... should be clear but now John Stanback become a competitor with Ethereal.
Schooner is also interesting ...

5 enignes load with 2 cores in ChessBase GUI:
Wasp, Ethereal, Schooner, Houdini and Fritz 17.

Just great to see how fast Ethereal found the right opening moves. Wasp need for critical lines in most of cases more time. Houdini and Fritz 17 are more speculative here.

I have new toys!
So, thank you to the programmers of Ethereal and Schooner!
That's what I like and see all the times.

Best
Frank

Re: Ethereal & Schooner seems to be "Big Monsters"

iCE is really a great engine, the programmer do a good job in developing because from version to version bad points are fixed.
Not easy to beat iCE in a fast game.

And the pawns goes ...
Started with 15. ... f4

With aggressives pawns Wasp made the points (the secret of Wasp, hope John will not read that).
Ethereal have it ... the aggessive pawns!

Aggressive pawn moves are in most of cases the secret for a short middlegame mate.

And now Schooner.
The game is for humans for sure very complicated.
But Schooner like such things (saw that in other games too, here the perfect example) and it seems the style is very speculative with aggressive knight, rooks and bishop moves. Not sure for the moment but the strength in middlegames seems to produced not with aggressive pawns. That is indeed very interesting! Need more of such games because such a style is new for me.

Again, Schooner try to produced with pawn moves more or less the open lines very fast.
Pawns not important for attacking moves, more important for produced open lines.
I saw in other games that Schooner gave pawns for nothing, only for try to get open lines.
Rooks are very fast on the right positions after opening book moves. That's more the human grandmaster style.
But for humans to complicated to hold such a style about a complete game because one mistake and the game is over.

Again, interesting what Schooner produced in the middlegames.
Houdini have such style and Fritz 17 comes with such a style.
Not to compare 1:1 ... again the style Schooner like is new for me because the moves are logical, complicated and it seems that Schooner have clear scheme. Often I am thinking what Houdini and Fritz 17 do is more speculative.

Please replay the game vs. Ethereal vs. SmarThink.

Ethereal with an attacking one both board sites (very rar) with ultra aggressive pawns.

SmarThink is also one of my favorits because positional the engine can play very nice moves and found a lot if I compare with books about games from Petrosjan or Botwinnik. Quiet clear what the programmer try out. But all the time the king safty is really a problem for SmarThink. But most important ... an engine goes a very own way in his style. That's what I like ... the engine have a very own face.

But what Ehtereal do with Smarthink in that game is what Carlsen would like to do in a game vs. each of us.

Just great, the complete game is just fantastic.
