Is the Englund Gambit lost?

Post by Ovyron »

This position:

1. d4 e5

[d]rnbqkbnr/pppp1ppp/8/4p3/3P4/8/PPP1PPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq -

Is now scoring worse than the Grob :shock:

It may be a mate in n for white already.

Can you find any line of defense? What's your drawing line against white strongest attack?

A main line to kick the discussion off would be good.

(edit: 2.de Nc6 3.Nf3 Qe7 I'm guessing)

Here is a starting point. I should have a much better plan tomorrow:
[d]rnbqkbnr/pppp1ppp/8/4p3/3P4/8/PPP1PPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - acd 60; ce 127; acs 7080; acn 270806000; pv dxe5 d6 Nf3 Nc6 Bg5 Qd7 exd6 Bxd6 Nc3 h6 Bh4 Nge7 Nb5 Nf5 Nxd6+ Nxd6 e3 Nf5 Qxd7+ Bxd7 O-O-O Nxh4 Nxh4 Ne5 Be2 O-O-O a3 g6 Rd4 Rhe8 Nf3 Ng4 Rf1 c5 Rd5 b6 Rxd7 Kxd7 Bb5+ Ke6 Bxe8 Rxe8 Kd2 Nf6 Ke2 Rd8 Nd2 Ng4 h3 Ne5 Rd1 f6 f4 Nc6 b3 f5 Nf3 Rxd1 Kxd1 b5 Ke2 Ne7 Kd3 a6 g3 Nd5 Nd2 Kd6 e4 fxe4+ Nxe4+ Kc6 a4 ; bm dxe5;

Unfortunately, all my high end machines are busy right now, and I can only give 30 cores to the effort.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

I think it should be obvious that this opening is a bad idea. Giving up a pawn for a tempo is a bad trade unless there is a clear developmental lead created. I do not see one here.

Does it definitely give up a pawn? After 2...Nc6 and 3...Qe7 black may re-gain it. (I know 3...Qe7 is ugly as it comes, but hey)

I habitually play as Black: 1.d4 e5, 2.de5 Bc5, 3.(Most any)...f6 [/b]offering the f pawn with tempo in 3/0 to 1/0 games. Hey, I've even picked up scalps of some good players I noticed almost pre-move the London with 2.Bf4...

You don't play this to 'get back the pawn'. You play this to throw your opponent into the streets with a tiny ticking clock about their necks...and watch them crumble under the pressure.

Anyway, "is the 'x' lost" posts amuse me...silly stuff and all at trying to prove something that should be self evident by people who would rather see chess as some mathematical exercise instead of a contest of wit and a struggle.

Even at the highest level - like the current Clutch tourney - you see objective 'crap' being played...but for a reason. Put up your engines aside and enjoy the struggle that is actual chess. :wink:

Hello:

I have looked into the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings, Volume A (1979). Despite being a fairly old edition, I found the twelve first moves of a game that I think it is interesting. I analysed it with SF 11 (backward-forward analysis in my really slow hardware for today standards, getting less than 350 kN/s) and evals are slowly decreasing despite being top-3 moves most of the time. I am not saying that both white and black played the best of the best in each move. Depths reached were among 20 with Multi-PV = 7, so not great. Anyway, I think it is worth a try in a faster hardware:

[pgn]
[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "1934.??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Kesten"]
[Black "Tartakower"]
[Result "?"]

1. d4 e5 2. dxe5 Nc6 3. Nf3 Qe7 4. Nc3 Nxe5 5. Nd5 Nxf3+ 6. gxf3 Qd8 7. Bf4 d6 8. Rg1 Be6 9. Nc3 c6 10. Qd4 Qb6 11. Qxb6 axb6 12. O-O-O O-O-O {Continues}
[/pgn]

However, I did not find the game in any free online database. I wonder if faster hardware with SF and/or Leela will bring decreasing evals like the ones I observed (something like from +1.3 for white after 2.- ..., Nc6 and +0.7 for white after 9.- ..., c6). Maybe an unlucky run after all, getting +0.99 at depth 24/43 after 9.- ..., c6 (proposing 10.- e4).

Regards from Spain.

Re: Is the Englund Gambit lost?

After analyzing the Grob for several months I still don't have a mainline for it, though I'm sure 1.g4 d5!! (white might survive other moves) is best, I have no idea about what is white's best second move.

It's similar on the Englund, I have no idea if after 2.dxe5!! (white must accept the gambit) 2...d6 is best or 2...Nc6 is best, or they transpose by force, but you can analyze one until it looks worse than the other, and at this rate they're going to be tied with a 3rd best move.

Though, I'm nowhere close to Dann's relative depth 66, my evals are on the -1.60s, and all signs point that black can't stop white from achieving a 2.00 advantage, though it's too early to make that claim yet.
