Re: Is there a name for this opening?

Post by Ajedrecista »

Hello Dann:

All the books I have searched give the following order of moves:

[pgn]1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Nc3 e6 5. g4 Bg6[/pgn]

So Nc3 before g4. They call it:

· 'The 4. ... e6 5. g4 Bg6 6. Nge2 Variation' (Beating the Caro-Kann. Vassilios Kotronias. 1994).
· 'Advance Variation: The Sharp 4. Nc3, Main Line 4. ...e6 5. g4 Bg6 6. Nge2 c5' (Starting Out: the Caro-Kann. Joe Gallagher. 2002).
· 'Advance Variation: The Sharp 4. Nc3, Main Line: Alternatives to 6. ... c5' (Starting Out: the Caro-Kann. Joe Gallagher. 2002).

Which agree with a tabulated list of ECO codes that I have got (which I think they are displayed in Arena GUI):

Code: Select all

*Version=1.17
*Author= Christopher Conkie, E-mail: *******@***********.com
[...]
{B12 Caro-Kann: Advance, Main Line, 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 e6 5.g4}1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 e6 5.g4
{B12 Caro-Kann: Advance, Main Line, 6.Nge2}1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 e6 5.g4 Bg6 6.Nge2
{B12 Caro-Kann: Advance, Main Line, 6.Nge2 c5}1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 e6 5.g4 Bg6 6.Nge2 c5
[...]
------------

Of course g4 can be played at fourth move:

Code: Select all

*Version=1.17
*Author= Christopher Conkie, E-mail: *******@***********.com
[...]
{B12 Caro-Kann: Advance, Bayonet Variation}1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.g4
[...]
Which was cited by Alan before as 'Bayonet Variation'.

------------

The Encyclopedia of Chess Openings, Volume B (1975) gives the two posibilities (g4 and Nc3 at the fourth move):

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. g4 Be4
1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Nc3 e6 5. g4 Bg6

But black moving ... e6 is in the order 4. Nc3 e6 5. g4.

Summarizing: 'Caro-Kann Defence, Advance Variation, Main Line 4. ... e6 5. g4 Bg6'.

Without entering in more lines, the principal variation given by ECO, Volume B (1975) is:

[pgn]1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Nc3 e6 5. g4 Bg6 6. Nge2 c5 7. h4 cxd4 8. Qxd4 Nc6 9. Qa4 h5 10. Nf4 Bh7 11. Nxh5 a6[/pgn]

Finishing with the comment: 'The position is unclear'. SF 11 does not like 8. Qxd4 and prefers 8. Nxd4. SF is indeed unclear about the supposed best move 12. Bg5, waving from -0.59 (d22/39) to +0.25 (d20/31). Analysis with Multi-PV = 7 at depth 24:

I guess that it is so popular it must have a name (and probably it is simply between named openings).
So I was wondering, is there a recognized name for this position?
(He looks lonely in the database, since all of his neighbors have names and he does not.)
My take is........ B12 Caro-Kann Defense: Advance Variation, Van der Wiel Attack
A Caro Kann attacl line Popularized by the Great Shirov himself....white pushes pawns to attack blacks bishop and hemmed in Kingside...("a double edged attack line with unclear outcomes")...... :)

It is a position that both SF and LC0 agree favors white.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

This is the closest that I found in scid.eco, which is the database SCID uses for ECO. The only difference is that this position has one more White move ( Nge2 ).

[d]rn1qkbnr/pp3ppp/2p1p1b1/3pP3/3P2P1/2N5/PPP1NP1P/R1BQKB1R b KQkq - eco B12w Caro-Kann: Advance, Main Line, 6.Nge2;

compared to the original position

[d]rn1qkbnr/pp3ppp/2p1p1b1/3pP3/3P2P1/2N5/PPP2P1P/R1BQKBNR w KQkq -
