What is discord?

Post by Dann Corbit »

I see that people are using it for distribution and when I go to look at it, it wants me to sign up.
So what is it? What am I signing up for?
What is the purpose of it?
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

It is a fancy chat room which supports voice, used by gamers quite a bit

Many many years ago I used paltalk. This was before the mobile phone days.
Before what’s app or Facebook messenger.

It was at a time we were sitting in front of old computers.

Maybe discord is something like paltalk.

I was not even aware of Discord prior to Leela chess, and it does take some getting used to.

If you want to keep an eye on what is happening with Lc0 it is by far the most active resource.
The name is Leela Chess Zero and 425419482568196106 is the "server" ID, I think.

I do recall supplying an email and picking a handle (Tinker), and you can get notifications if you are mentioned or get PM'd.

There are also servers for Stockfish (435943710472011776) and Allie+Stein (557671837501489162).

Of course, there are numerous other servers for a great many topics.

I tried to setup a Talkchess Discord channel for the rear occasions when the Talkchess website is down.

You know the thing, where you go into a chat room, and everybody's just there concurring with each other?

Discord is for when you want to set up your own place with your own friends, to all have a different opinion.

Except that's not how it works at all, and it's really just a chat room with extra emojis. In any case it's worth joining the Lc0 Discord.
