Endgame masterpiece from Stockfish-Komodo

Post by Alayan »

Komodo is having an incredible showing right now at CCC13 SemiFinals, only slightly behind Leelenstein, Lc0 and Stockfish after 50 games.

Stockfish just managed to break the equal score through an endgame same-color-bishop win that long looked drawn to all the spectators : https://www.chess.com/computer-chess-championship#event=ccc13-semifinals&game=104

SF steadily had its eval improving from move 37, where the SCB endgame began, to move 66 where it first broke the +2 barrier. Eval then became much more erratic, but with a general upward trend. On move 81, Komodo went above +0.76 for the first time, and then its eval also began to slowly grow.

The position on move 82 is definitely a forced, deep win, though at that stage many still thought SF must have been dreaming :
[d]2b5/8/p2p3k/P1pP3p/7P/2K5/1P2B3/8 w - - 67 82

But when did the decisive mistake actually occur ?

Here is the position where SF first crossed +2 :
[d]8/6k1/p2p4/P1pP3p/B6P/4K2b/1P6/8 w - - 35 66

However, considering how complicated this endgame is and how my homefish struggles to see anything several moves later in the game, it is quite likely that this is only the move where SF "saw it", not the actual first position that was won for white. but then, what was the deciding mistake ?

Is the starting position of the SCB endgame already a forced mate ? Both engines were below +1 at that point.

[d]6k1/1p6/p2p4/PbpP3p/4BPpP/8/1P3P1K/8 b - - 0 37

This game makes Bh3!! look like regular Bh3.

If I had to guess, 37. Be8 seems like the loss. Kf7 or Kg7 look better (I like Kg7 because it's a dark square, but I can't see any real difference).
